Match of the day RIP

Watched match of the day last night , my god that programme has dropped it's standards over the last two years, The premier league went over to ITV for 3 seasons and it Was dreadful, games all over in 10 mins it came back to the BBC and i thought bout time, back where it belongs but after last night i'm in shock.
The wigan chelsea game was on for all of .............yes 10 minutes and loads happened czech got sent off would not leave the pitch but that wasnt shown at all. The rest of the games was just as bad liverpool, 7 goals in the game on for 6 mins
they used to show 2 main games bout 30 mins each then all other goals.
I look forward to match of the day every saturday but it's garbage (plus alan hansen one of the greatest ever defenders never EVER smiles)
The programme shows basically just the goals i'm sitting there how did that corner happen where did that chance/goal start from? UTTER RUBBISH
Anyone else feel the same or otherwise?

Re: Match of the day RIP

Far too much analysis at the end of each game

OK it's not as bad as MOTD 2 (shirley more time spent discussing the game than watching it) but it's getting that way.

I'm starting to watch this on my Freeview box now, 20 mins behind real time.

By the time i've skipped most of the discussions, i've made up that 20 mins in the 80 odd minute programme

Was it just me or did anyone else find the picture keep breaking up last night? It kept stuttering and freezing and gave up after the Spurs game.

I'll listen to Hansen all the bloody time, just please don't give us Garth Crooks.

If there is one pundit I would gladly shoot, it's him. His voice and patronising tone relly boils my ****.

I've got to watch final score with the sound muted otherwise I'll smash the telly.

Annoying lttle twerp.

Exaggerating every other word, you'll have to explain your reasoning, because you've lost me.

I think he means it's Crooks' style of over-emphasising and exagerating every other word that annoys him. It wasn't a dig at you.

Personally i don't mind either but Steve Claridge on The Football League show after MOTD that gets the award for most annoying TV pundit imo. He can't speak for more than three seconds without looking at his notes and seems to have an aversion to looking Manish Bhasin in the eye.

They spend too long analysing certain games and totally disregard some others, offering only a handful of words in comparison.

Chiles is a plonker on MoTD2 too. Almost a parody of himself

Re: Match of the day RIP

It's true that they generally only concentrate on the 'big' teams during post-match analyses. I know we're rubbish, but in the past few weeks they've probably talked about Hull City for less than 2 minutes in total and didn't think to discuss the possible reasons for our catastrophically awful defending of late (ie. selling Michael Turner).

Still, I think it's a decent enough programme but, if anything, it could do to be even longer.

I tend to record it now on a Saturday and catch up with it on a Sunday. Cheer up Hanson anyone would think your team had lost not won 6-1 by his reaction after the liverpool game

Best Footie show for me is the "Sunday Supplement" on sky sports, especially when they have Martin Samuel on, Quality that is

Did anyone notice how when Liverpool scored 6 it was done to the brilliance of Liverpool and Torres, but when Spurs score 5, with Keane getting 4, it's down to poor defending.

Re: Match of the day RIP

I still like MOTD, but I would rather they ditched Hanson and Lawrenson and got more contemporary pundits.
Both retired in the late 80's/early 90's, for god's sake.
There must be a fair proportion of the audience don't even know who they are, football career-wise.
There must be a plethora of recently retired players looking to get into punditry, so ditch the creaking old cronies and get some mid-30's boys in.

To be fair, they did highlight the defensive errors in both cases but you have to admit Burnley's were pretty bad even compared to Hull's - the amount of one on ones with no defenders within ten yards of the Spurs strikers was ridiculous. Liverpool were lucky that their chances fell to Torres.

On the subject of Hansen and Lawro, i actually like the former. Lawrensen rarely adds anything but Hansen at least highlights the defensive msitakes with some authority. Tbh the problem seems to be who to replace them with - Martin Keown pops up on MOTD2 and he's better than sleeping pills.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not belittling Torres in any way, and I agree that Spurs found loads of space behind Burnley, but some of the through balls into that space, from Huddlestone and particularly Jenas, were brilliant, as was the awareness and positioning of Keane. I just thought we deserved more credit.

On topic, Linekar, Hansen and Lawro all too full of themselves and need replacing.

I'd agree with you there, the through balls were perfect, but it was the defense stopping that seems to have lessened the impact of what would otherwise have been fantastic goals. In particular, when Keane had time to look around about three times before striking the ball. It's a pity as most, if not all the chances would still have been converted and the victory would have been hailed as being even greater. On a side note, i did feel sorry for Jensen - by the end he'd stopped asking for his defenders to do anything and just looked disconsolate.

I think the whole MOTD team, if replaced, would have to be very carefully chosen. It's a fine line between the dry and arguably broing line-up they have, and the over-the-top laddishness of the Sky Sports panel, who all seem to re-use "sick as a parrot" a dozen times per match. Lee Dixon isn't bad and i've always liked Mcmanaman as he doesn't seem to mind criticising Liverpool.

Re: Match of the day RIP

I've noticed that the picture quality is noticeably worse than on Sky Sports for some reason. Mind you, as someone else has already said, nobody has a picture quality anywhere near as nad as ITV !

I think maybe they could replace one of the pundits as it's all to much of a Scouse love-in as far as I'm concerned

Presumably the length of the highlights & picture quality are dictated by whatever Sky give them within the terms of their contract?
