What a relief

As a Crystal Palace fan I was expecting to be embarrassed after the Palace Manchester City game last night but I was proud of the lads who I think put up an excellent showing.

City are now the richest club in the world and can and have bought many of the most expensive players in the world with their open checkpoint whilst Palace are skint with their summer signings being three free transfers and a teenager on loan from West Ham.

Of the Eagles on display last night five were teenagers with Moses, Clyne and Scannell being local lads brought on by the highly rated Palace Academy with 18 year old Moses causing all sorts of problems for the multi million pound City defence whilst 18 year old Clyne operating as the Palace right back made the Ciy left wing almost a no go territory.

Now back down to earth with Peterborough away at the weekend

Re: What a relief

Couldn't agree more. Shay Given was the difference between the two sides in the first half. If Freddie Sears & Victor Moses can un-nerve championship defenders the same way they ruffled City last night then we could be a surprise package this year.
Was gutted I couldn't make the game last night, barring a few top names City pretty much put out the top starting XI

Had no idea you were a Palace fan Ian. Are you from the area ?

Re: What a relief

I thought Palace played superbly last night, gave us a real scare, especially in the first half. There was motivation there to beat a first XI of City, and with a bit of luck on another day, you would've done.

If you can get your players to play like that regularly, you must surely be in with a shout of a decent league position. Good luck

I grew up in Surrey / Sussex worked in Croydon for many years and used to go to all of the home games at the time. I don't visit Selhurst Park any more but still catch the occasional away game in the Midlands.

Re: What a relief

Cheers Lawrence. Was very suprised to see Lescott making his debut last night although once I had settled down I realised it was a sensible decision. I dare say if we had the same match against you a few months down the line once your defense has gelled a little better we might not fair as well as we did.
Only a few days of the window left so I really hope we can hang on to Victor Moses atleast until January. He was superb last night.

I also thought palace played very well i also thought that young freddie sears who is on loan iirc from west ham, played really well run himself into the ground Victor Moses also played very well future looks promising you have a decent manager proven in the championship as well, least said about your flamboyant Chairmen the better but we all have our crosses to bear asl long as he backs the manager and keeps his nose out of team affairs you will do ok.

Good luck for the rest of the season its a very tough league

I grew up in Streatham and went to school in Selhurst (BRIT school). Was living in Croydon but moved away 5 years ago........I don't miss it in the slightest. Its all about away games for me now. One every so often makes it special. Cardiff away is the next in my diary.

Re: What a relief

Thoroughly enjoyed the game last night good PQ from sky especially the close ups I felt. Good on palace provided a good stern test for the City last night certainly in the 1st half, 2nd half well that's what you spend your money for that bit of quality that wins you games, great goal from SWP that was a fabulous bit of business getting him back from Chelsea and making a profit

I'm a big fan of Simon Jordan and have had the pleasure of meeting him. If it wasn't for him the club would have been sucked into serious financial troubles on many occasions.

Totally agree. They were sluggish but every so often the individual class came through, SWP goal was a prime example of that. I did enjoy Robinho's poor showing and subsequent stick form the home fans

For me Robinho would do well to have a look at SWP. SWP for me a few year back was a lot of party tricks but suffered with an end product whereas now he's reigned it in a bit and is a better player. Not knocking Robinho, class nutmeg last night but no end product.

Personally I think he is too arrogant to adapt his style for the league. He is probably thinking he should have never left La Liga.

Maybe, I think he might do better for you though this year. With the squad you've assembled for me you are in position to leave him on the bench if he's not producing the goods. And nobody wants to be warming benches with it being a world cup year

Did anyone else in the 1st half wonder whether the linesman might have a season ticket in the stretford end

Some absolute shockers last night, I didn't realise a player could be offside from within his own half.

I've never seen a player given offside in his own half before, that was a spectacular one. It wasn't even close! I take the point about Robbie needing a bit more to his game though - though to be fair to him that was the most I've seen him tackle back in quite a while believe it or not...

I agree that Simon Jordan is a bit out of place as chairman of a football club as it isn't normal for clubs to be owned by people of integrity who aren't afraid to upset the old boys club by speaking their minds

I also laughed at where the resulting free kick was taken from, abut 10 yards inside the Palace half, 15 yards from where Robinho actaully was!

Still, great performance from Palace, they will be tough to beat if they can keep up that pace each week.

It was swings and roundabouts though. There were a couple of poor offside decisions but there again there was a City defender handling the ball in his own area as well as a crafty shove from another in the closing minutes.

While I agree about the Richards' pulling down incident, the handball would have been very unfortunate.

Now back to earth with them playing like a bunch of headless chickens against mighty Peterborough in the league

Alan Lee seems a pretty good target man and Freddie Sears should be able to grab loads of goals off Lee but why were there three wingers sitting on the bench with no wide man playing until the last 20 minutes

It seems that some teams can raise their games against higher placed league sides in the cup but when it comes down to the crunch they can't perform. Warnock must be pulling his hair out ....

Warnock may be an excellent motivator of men but I don't understand his tactics. Surely it's common sense if you have a big centre forward who can dominate the air and a speedy striker working alongside him that you also have one or two widemen who can cross the ball from the flanks over to the target man.

I can understand him not playing Moses for the full 90 minutes as he hasn't fully recovered from the clattering he received in the week but he had two other wingers sitting on the bench too.

I can understand him not playing Moses for the full 90 minutes as he hasn't fully recovered from the clattering he received in the week but he had two other wingers sitting on the bench too.
Possibly but then the two widemen might not be providing the defensive cover he needs, especially in an away game ...
