US Open Tennis 2009

The final Grand Slam of the year starts soon

Official website, with schedule of play updated as and when

Britains Andy Murray has been seeded 2nd. I would love to see him go one better and win it after losing in last years final to Roger Federer but expect the Swiss or (a fit) Rafael Nadal to win it

Nadal has been struggling in the hard court so far.

Re: US Open Tennis 2009

I don't think Murray quite has it. Fed Ex to deliver again. Not sure where Nadal's fitness is. I expect an extended winter for him

Del Potro and A-Rod to feature as well

Re: US Open Tennis 2009

At least it means Murray avoids Federer and Nadal until the final.

At number 3 seed, Murray has been facing Federer in the semis.

Now, if he plays to the level he has recently, he shouldn't face any real threat until the final.

However, that's easy for me to say...

Re: US Open Tennis 2009

Federer was on exceptional form in Cincinnati and will be hard to beat if he carries it over to Flushing Meadows...

Andy has recently played two long hard Masters 1000 series events, going all the way in one and going deep into the other... Hope he's been resting well cause these three to five set'ers take a lot out of you over two weeks and with the likes of Nadal, Djokovic, Del Potro, Roddick and Feds around its gonna be one tough ask to even match his progress from last year...

Good luck Andy, has as good a chance as the rest of em and has beaten them all at least once in his career... This is deffo his favourite playing surface so I'm fully expecting him to cruise through the first week and get to at least the semi's when the business end of the tournament really begins!!

Back on topic, I can't see anyone but Serena winning it on the women's side. I do not suppose Safina will actually do anything to justify her No1 ranking

Oh, and Djokovic will end up caving in as usual

Andy Murray plays against Gulbis tonight (at 01:30 !). Should be a comfortable win for him
Tempted to stay up for it but will probably regret it

Murray has a really tough route to the final too

Yeah it's a night match and he's on after someone else so about 8.30pm their time. Hopefully some of his other matches will be earlier for him and us

I would record it and watch it after work but avoiding the result and reports is impossible considering I'm online all day and 'Murray Mania'

I give Murray a big chance of winning this. I make Fed the favourite but would not be suprised if Murray pulls off his first Grand Slam victory.

Awesome display from Nadal

P.S. The Safina's can stop having to go on the defensive when the sister wins a bloody Slam

I tend to avoid womens tennis generally because it is generally dross.

Is it necessary for Sharapova to scream at the top of voice after every point!?

Re: US Open Tennis 2009

Why are so many of the women tennis players overweight? Some of them have a right spare tyre.

It was being discussed on Eurosport this morning (so it isn't just me) where they were saying some of them were just not fit enough to move around the court fast enough to save points they should have.

You would have thought that athletes who spend so much time training and playing wouldn't have an ounce of fat on them.

They also discussed how poorly they compared with the men, with the opinion from Rusedski and Croft being the top women wouldn't even make it into the top 300 of the mens game.

Yet they demand equal prize money and complain when their matches aren't on centre court because the men's matches get preference...

A few years ago Serena Williams, at her very peak, played some male club player, ranked 700 or so in the world. Despite the fact the guy was drinking pints during the match, he still beat her 6-0 6-1.

The gulf between the men and the women is ridiculously huge. The men are just more technical, more powerful and apply far more topspin on the ball.

I totally agree on the prize money debate, during Grand Slams the men play best of 5 sets, the women best of 3. The men don't get paid more because of sexism, they get paid more because they are quite simply playing more and putting in more hard work.

No, that's not true.

It was at the Australian Open in 1998. A male player called Karsten Braasch, who was ranked 203 at the time, played one set each against the Williams sisters and beat a 16-year old Serena 6-1 and a 17-year old Venus 6-2. He claimed his training schedule included beer and cigarettes and had a quick ciggie during the changeover.

Yeah, Cilic was terrific today. Murray's errors and inability to deal with Cilic's great forehnad let him down big time.

Surely Murray will win a slam at some point though. I think he is good enough, just needs to put it together over two weeks.

I have been reading this 'someday' nonsense for years. Pretty much the same when Henman was playing. Murray simply cannot get it right when it matters, top players do... fact!

If he was good enough, he would have won one by now instead of failing at the last hurdle.

If he doesn't win one next year, whilst ranked no 2 in the world, then I think he will become another Henman. Good, but not great.

Don't get me wrong, I hope he does win a slam. But I am not betting on it...

Re: US Open Tennis 2009

Well i think hes a better player now then Henman ever was, and i think he can still improve. I dont think to many were talking about granslam titles for Murray a few years back. Its only the last year to eighteen months where hes made massive strides and proved he can beat the top players. So its still early days, not like hes 27, 28 and still not won one. In fact hes not long 22 years of age, number two in the world yet being written off already.
