Does the sporting press' vernacular annoy you?

Things like:

team eye player;

lost the dressing-room;

over the moon;

team a sink team b.

It makes me sick as a parrot to hear supposedly trained journalists with the vocabulary of an 8-year-old child.

What's the point?

Re: Does the sporting press' vernacular annoy you?

I don't think it makes altogether much of a difference in the end because it is still the same 90% made up rumours to fill what would otherwise be empty pages over the summer. Hence the press join the country in becoming plastic tennis fans two weeks in June in what is otherwise non-existent coverage

It takes two to tango and I for one would wish people stop treating the back pages with so much credence. Even the Gospel is disputed so quite why people are so quick to believe what the tabloids write is beyond me

They have now lost two games on the spin, on the bounce, on the bubble

Obviously consecutive is too difficult for them to pronounce

Re: Does the sporting press' vernacular annoy you?

What I find irritating, or perhaps just cringeworthy, is when most footballers get interviewed after the game. Everything is just cliched statements.

When the season starts up again just listen to the likes of Stevie G, Ryan Giggs, Lamps or Terry giving an interview.

Basic summary of every single interview will be "yeah they were tough opponents, always give everything, my goals don't concern me as long as the team win, lads done well".

Re: Does the sporting press' vernacular annoy you?

The thing that annoys me most of all is when something is "a big ask"...is that grammatically correct or am I right to be bugged to hell by it?

Unless it's Stevie G in which case it will be-
"erm yeah they were tough opponents, erm always give erm everything, erm my goals don't concern me erm as long as the team win, erm lads done well"

Re: Does the sporting press' vernacular annoy you?

Sky Sports can be particularly annoying when it comes to chat and commentary.

Richard Keys with his constant jacket-tugging while he "ho ho ho, this should be a cracker" his way through his presentation, then always expertly covering up when its ****.

Andy Gray always saying "I'll tell you what", or "well for me", as if his comments are the only ones that matter in the entire world of football.

Or just everything Jamie Redknapp says - Mr Coma. I can't say anything controversial at all cos I'm best mates with all these guys. Me and Louise often pop round to Lamps, Terry etc so I can never criticise them.

Dreadful pundit and commentator, the worst on TV in my opinion. If Andy Gray is commentating on a match I have to get rid of him if at all possible.

Re: Does the sporting press' vernacular annoy you?

The other ones that annoy me are those sports presenters who seem to think it's compulsory to pronounce the letter "t" as a "d" all the time.

Example please.

Or the likes of Motto and especially Pleat who seem to make up names for lots of the players.

Many people on commentary continually call Zlatan Imbrahimovic "Abramovich". Idiots the lot of them.

for me sky has gone downhill big time...but they are still far far far better then any combination of commentary team from ITV, Setanta or BBC...cant stand clive tyldesley, mark lawrenson, ian croooker and john motson getting worse with age too...

tbh, andy gray is far to biased towards man utd and as a self-proclaimed utd fan, Sky should never have let him admit that on a live broadcast, but occasionally he does speak some sense and generally gets most of the calls right...another of my most hated is brian marwood...everything that guy says is utter ******...

Re: Does the sporting press' vernacular annoy you?

Examples :-
Jeff Stelling frequently goes on about teams at the "boddum" of the league and mentions "Noddingham Forest" and "Celdic" a lot as well I've notice that the Moose on Talk Sport has started doing this since he moved over to doing the football news on there. The other day he was on about the current football "tiddle taddle" in the papers
Talk properly you dwads!

Re: Does the sporting press' vernacular annoy you?

Jamie Redknapp bores me. He never really seems to say anything out of the ordinary and i learn nothing from listening to his points of view. He is also biased towards Chelsea and Liverpool. Wish he wasnt a pundit before nearly every game.

This is a cliche that annoys me. Lets say Sam Allardyce (and a multitude of other managers) is talking about not being able to compete financially with the 'big 4' and he will always say "we cant compete with the Liverpools, the Chelseas, the Arsenals and the Manchester Uniteds of this world". Why bother dropping the 's' on the end of each team?

Re: Does the sporting press' vernacular annoy you?

When they talk about a golfer "carding" 69 or whatever. Grrr..

"Want-away-striker" is particularly irritating. Pardon me for feeling no sympathy whatsoever for someone being paid £40k a week to warm a bench.

Martin Brundle's "He outbraked himself there". WTH does that even mean???

Watch how many footballers scratch their neck when giving their moronic interviews. A sure sign they don't believe what they're saying.

Oh and the guy who reads the football scores on the radio: "Bolton Wander-ruh-ruh-ers neeeeeal "
