re: Boxing Discussion Thread *possible spoilers*

Chagaev V Valuev

I really don't care who wins this one.

Berto V Urango

Berto should win this - he has skills & i think is the better man

Cotto V Clottey

Cotto for me - important fight for him, will be in position for the marquee fights. Clottey is no mug.

Tyson Fury - far too early to make any concrete assessments

Klitschko V Haye

Like to see Haye win this. Putting himself up against the BIG heavyweights is to be commended. Wlad is a Strong bloke - good jab. Crux will be when Haye gets hit flush - will he be able to take heavyweight power. Both fighters will be in great shape.

Kotelnik V Khan

I still can't warm to Khan - but, he will be better under Roach. I'll give him the nod on this one.

Mayweather V Marquez

Floyd will make sure he has all the advantages for this - especially if it's at 147. Floyd rarely takes risks.
Safe to say we all like Marquez & i'd LOVE to see him win.
Will the 18 month or so lay off hurt him?. Marquez is not the sort of boxer you'd like to take on after an extended layoff - which is why Floyd will ensure he holds the cards in his hands.

Lacy V Jones

Wasn't aware of this fight - If it happens..Oh dear - I'll still go far Jones as he'll have to much boxing skills for Lacy.

It will be interesting to see who Carl Froch takes on next - I think it will be Lucian Bute
Looking forward to seeing Paul Williams next fight. This guy really does have all the tools coupled with an outrageous reach advantage!
Would like to see Mikkel Kessler get involved - looks like he has issues with his promotions team which may hinder (for the moment)
We await the Pac express next fight too!

cotto vs clottey was a damn good fight brutal aswell
cotto did well for the win and with the eye gash

mayweather marquez postponed as is khans fight, i still have no idea why his fights are shown on sbo it aint worthy material, and that looks likely to move to the 18th july now unless frank warren finds another opponent, roy jones and JL will be a good fight, but Rjj should win comfortably
wonder when we'll see juan diaz and jesus diaz fight again

Watching it at the moment, I know a lot of boxing fans hate both the Klitschko brothers, but they can say what they want, I love the technical way they fight for heavyweights, the way they don't spend most of the fight hugging each other and the fact they're both in good shape, looks like a couple of interesting other fights on the lineup too

I started the thread before the fight was delayed because of Kotelnik's tooth "injury", but yeah it is delayed to the 16th

errrr, yeah great, if you love watching someone jab , jab, jab, jab, jab , jab, right hand.....jab, jab, jab, jab, jab, jab, right hand......oooo, he has got a bit close, hold....jab, jab, jab, jab,, jab, jab, right hand

He may be very technical at those 2 punches and yes he is in good shape for a big guy, but he does not throw uppercuts, hooks, body shots...just 2 punches, over and over! He is also scared to death of being hit, and will avoid trading at all costs. How any boxing fan can think that is great is beyond me

Yes i agree wasnt a great fight to watch but ill give him credit he controlled the fight how he wanted it. There's not point changing anything if your controlling the fight to how you want it?
The other guy should of got in close whatever the cost, it was the only way he was going to get a chance of winning.

Oh don't get me wrong they're not exciting boxers, but they're better than some heavyweights out there, I mean a lot of them just swing wildly looking for the one punch then clinch, at least the Klitschko brothers have technical sides to their fight, it might not be the most exciting but it's boxing.

Why throw hooks and uppercuts when you're able to score KO's with a straight right?

I think given the heavyweight divisions boxers they're some of the best to watch, sadly...

I don't think any heavyweight fight has been great for years, certainly not something i'd want to watch over again, that's where welterweight and middleweight have been better over the past few years.

Chagaev never had the power to trouble Wlad, even if he can't take hits well, Chagaev isn't a big hitter, he would have needed to get in and fire a couple of good headshots off to even bother him.

Because there is more to boxing than jabs and straight rights.Boxing is as much a businesss as it is a sport, and people want to be entertained, they do not want to watch somone throwing jabs for 8 rounds until their opponent has lost the will to fight back and can be taken out safely

Exactly, so why did Wlad feel he had to fight so negativley? Klit has ko power in both hands and all the tools needed to be a formidable destructive force in the ring but he is so petrified of being ko'd again, that he just jabs, jabs, jabs until there is no fight left in his opponent - ok, it is effective, but what is the point in being effective if nobody wants to watch it (apart from the weird Germans)?

Lennox Lewis was able to employ the same tactics, and I would say his straight right was even more powerful than Klit's, but Lewis didnt fight like that all the time - he varied his styles and strategy depending on his opponents, jabbing dangerous sluggers like Tua into submission and destroying fighters like Golota with a barrage of punches in the 1st round. I would say Lewis had one of the most devastating uppercuts in boxing, should he not have thrown that punch because it was safer to just throw jabs and straight rights?

The sooner Haye gets in the ring with Klit and ko's him the better off boxing will be IMO

I agree there is more to boxing than straight rights, and a tall boxer should be destroying shorter guys with uppercuts, don't get me wrong I think it's a shame that he isn't taking advantage of this, the problem with the heavyweight division now is it isn't an entertaining division and it's going to take an awful lot to make it exciting again, that's why the lower divisions will become more popular, you get the speed and exciting bouts.

Wlad went into the fight not knowing totally what was in front of him, though he goes into every fight with negativity, it's what gives him the defensive style and why he is able to win so many fights. The Germans will watch any boxing, and they always get good crowds, I don't know why, but in the heavyweight division it is boring, and it needs something doing about it... what I do not know, the likes of Haye as you said and also Tyson Fury could possibly help but I don't think it's enough.

Lewis had a great straight right, and of course he varid his style well, as for one of the most devastating uppercuts in boxing i'm not totally sure i'd agree with you, Tyson had a better uppercut and he was a shorter guy, if he was taller that would have been scary, then you have Rocky Marciano - had a brilliant uppercut, George Foreman - especially that one that destroyed Frazier, then there is an old great like Earnie Shavers, though still have to give Lewis some credit, but his uppercut was hardly amazing.

I'm not saying any boxer has any excuse to avoid throwing certain punches, they should be working on their weaker punches to try improve their game, as you said, they are entertainers. The problem is the tall eastern european fighters have this style and it works, so what reason would they have to change it

Agreed, there are too many bum heavyweights about that need sorting out with speed and power rather than just technique and reach. It's a shame the heavyweight division has taken such a fall, lets hope it can get back up to standard.

i think david haye will get his ass wooped, i see him fight in Reading a few years back at the rivermead leisure centre and he blatantly got beat. He was out on his feet and the ref stepped into give him a breather and then when he threw a decent combination a few mins later the ref jumped in and said the other bloke was unfit to continue. im not saying he is no good but i dont think he is up to the challenge but il gladly have a wager with anyone on it

He's scheduled for the 18th of July providing they can get someone to fight him, he's finding it hard enough to get a sparring partner, never mind someone to actually fight!

He's supposed to be on the undercard for the Danny McIntosh vs Nathan Cleverly fight, as is Phill Fury.

Mind revealing who this opponent was? Apart from his loss to Thompson early in his career when he had stamina issues, the only other times I have seen him remotely troubled are when he was knocked down against Mormeck (before ko'ing the frenchman) and when he was cut against Fragomeni (I think it was that fight). Perhaps it is a fight I have missed but Haye's other fights have been pretty 1 sided as far as I remember.

There is obviously a danger that Haye can be sparked out by any top heavyweight but he also has the speed, skills and power to ko anyone in the world - something very few of todays heavyweights can say.

Not sure on the times of each bout...
But the card at Manchester is as follows:

Enzo Maccarinelli - Denis Lebedev
Kell Brook - Michael Lomax
Andriy Kotelnik - Amir Khan
Matthew Hall - Anthony Small
James DeGale - Ciaran Healy
Billy Joe Saunders - ?
Frankie Gavin - Graham Fearn
Kevin Mitchell - ?

York has a number of potential fights lined up but none with confirmed opponents, this is where the Fury boys are due to fight, but I know Tyson has been having a hard time to find fights, so we'll see...
Danny McIntosh - Nathan Cleverly
being the only fight scheduled, there are a number of other fighters rumoured to be fighting that night, maybe if they get opponents then they'll pop them on the early part of the box office broadcast, which is as you say at 9pm on Sky Box Office and Box Office HD, costing about £15, which I think i'll pass on.

re: Boxing Discussion Thread *possible spoilers*

Has anyone who is posting on this Boxing-related site actually laced on the contest gloves and climbed through the ropes in order to test their courage, fitness and fortitude to the limits (and beyond) on four hundred square feet of bloodstained canvas?
I suspect that the proportion of the male population of the UK which has ever Boxed competitively must be negligible - but I'm open to correction on this point!
Look forward to receiving enlightenment.

I don't see what that has to to with talking about a sport?
People who have played football, tennis etc a few times can have a debate about the sport, so why should it be different about boxing?

Either way, I used to go to a local boxing gym and have done some training with a friend who boxed as an amatuer, but I don't think it makes any difference...

Hehe, he's not exactly great is he, proved that in his last 2 fights, but credit to him for accepting the fight.

I think Amir Will win, I think it should quite a challenge for him though, will be interesting to see how he gets on against an experienced fighter who is still fighting well.

re: Boxing Discussion Thread *possible spoilers*

sad day for boxing
37 y/o boxing legend aturo gatti found dead in his hotel in brazil

Former legend of the ring Arturo Gatti has been found dead in a hotel bedroom in Brazil at the age of 37.

Early reports suggest foul play could be involved with signs of injury to the former world champion's head.

He had arrived at the seaside resort of Porto de Galinhas with his wife and one-year-old son on Friday.

Gatti was known as the 'human highlight reel' for his blood and guts performances that earned him fans all over the world.

He held the IBF super-featherwight and WBC light-welterweight titles and was involved in a famous trilogy with 'Irish' Micky Ward, winning the last two contests on points.

However, despite later picking up the WBC belt his hard fights appeared to take their toll on the 'Thunder', who was past his best when Floyd Mayweather Jr took the title in 2005 with a sixth round stoppage.

He fought on, losing two of his next three fights before retiring in 2007 with a record of 40-9 with 31 wins by stoppage.

Very sad news - the Gatti/Ward fights might have lacked something in the way of technical skills (particularly the last one) but they were certainly thrilling to watch.
