Tannoy F4 for 120 .. anything better to consider at this price ?

Hi folks

I have seen the deal at the moment at RS who are selling Tannoy F4 floor standers for 120 and was wondering if there was anything I should consider in the same price range before nipping on the phone to reserve a set ?

Though chances are that I'll be on the phone faster than a bat out of hell to reserve a set as soon as they open hehe

Re: Tannoy F4 for 120 .. anything better to consider at this price ?

Says £150 on their website. (is this an in store price?)
I've heard them, and if you can get them for £120 it will be a true bargain.
The do go low, and are easy to drive with a smaller amp/mini system etc.
Once run in, you will find they are stunning with a wide, open and transparent sound.
The treble never sounds harsh, and the sound is just so effortless.
They are dynamic without being in your face.

I wouldn't describe them as exciting though, rather i would say they they are refined/restrained.
This isn't a bad thing, as they don't fatigue you like some of the cheaper speakers in this price range.

Re: Tannoy F4 for 120 .. anything better to consider at this price ?

Thanks for the reply guys!

As Willian said they are down for a special at the moment ... was advertised at 120 in some of the HiFi mags out there, from what I remember it was in "Hi-Fi Choice" and prices are valid from 7th December 2008 to 13th January 2009 (but my memory may be wrong hehe)

Will give the local store a call and see if I can get them at the same price as William.

I'll be driving it of a Yamaha 1500 so should be interesting to hear it rather than through the temporary Acoustic Solutions bookshelf speakers I got to tide me over till I got some floorstanders

-C

EDIT: Just called all the stores in Scotland and they are no longer in stock anywhere. Will be getting more in but only after the special for 119 is finished <cries>

Does that mean they will stock them at £150 again or retail prices?

I can only say that on or around the 7th of December I was able to walk into the Guildford branch clutching my HiFi mag and walk out with two pairs plus centre.

Prior to reading their sale advert I had no intention of even buying speakers but that changed.

Unfortunately for that price I am sure they were selling quickly and he who hesitates is lost etc etc.

I am surprised they are getting more stocks to sell at the pre sale price as I surmised in must be the end of the line for Tannoy F customs, hence the bargain price.

However, it has now led me to order a Tannoy TS12 sub so it was the F4's that got me on the hook and now I am being reeled in!

Well, if you can afford £165, try Superfi.co.uk

Keep in mind that HiFix.co.uk is still selling them for £282 per pair. Even the SuperFi price is still good deal.

Re: Tannoy F4 for 120 .. anything better to consider at this price ?

Will, i have no doubt some people got them for that price.
You got a great deal, and prove they did at least have some stock.
But sometimes retailers advertise "loss leaders" to get you in the shop.
"Loss leaders" are normally in very limited supply, so they don't lose too much.
Once you are in the shop, it makes it much easier to steer you onto something else.

If this offer was genuine, why wouldn't they let people pay now (at the offer price) and then wait for the new stock etc.

I do agree, sometimes I am tempted by an Argos sale price only to find the damn item is not in stock anywhere in driving distance.

This offer was even publicised on Hotukdeals with many people posting gleefuly on their resultant purchases.

Regarding new stock at the old higher price I cannot think of a satisfactory explanation other than that unbelievable price could not be sustained past the end of sale date.

If it was indeed a "loss leader" it would explain it. However, from numerous references on this Forum it appeared to me that they had large warehouse stocks that were moving very fast, hence my belief that it was the end of the road for Tannoy F customs.

If paying that then I wonder how they would compare to the Mission M33i's(whathifi seemed to like them), which are ten pounds cheaper than the Tannoy F4's at Superfi.

Re: Tannoy F4 for 120 .. anything better to consider at this price ?

When I called the local branch I asked when they would be getting more stock and he said "2 to 3 weeks" I asked if the current price of 120 would still stand as I was calling within the sale period and the sales rep said that they would reserve me a pair but they would be 150 as they arrive they would no longer be within the sale. Was completely gutted . Had I known about it earlier I'd have gone in but as luck would have it I found out too late ...

I was considering the TDL Saturn 10 floorstanders in their stead as they are now on special at 99 quid ... dont know how they hold against the Tannoy F4s though ... anyone have any views / coments ??.

These look like a very good deal at £179.99, although can't find a single professional review for them so perhaps too risky.

Good idea Flexo786 I'll take a nip in and see what I can get deal wise if they have some on display.

Cheers for the alternate Tetlee but cash is a lil on the tight side hence why only dropping 120 on the F4s looked so attractive.

any store should be able to tell you what stores have stock and which ones have ex display as went to the sheffield one and he told me that there were ex displays in shops as far as birmingham and the only one with actual stock was leicester i think

No probs, I'm on the lookout for speakers myself(had also been trying to somehow grab some of the £120 F4's) so just sharing any floorstanders I spot that fall close to your budget.

Another of my finds which I can't find reviews for but is closer still to your budget at £146(should you not be able to source any of the F4 Customs) are these chappies WHARFEDALE VARDUS VR400 SPEAKERS (PAIR) - available from Superfi UK Visit http://www.superfi.co.uk/index.cfm/page/moreinfo.cfm/product_id/4207 for details

I know Wharfedale are a highly respected brand, oddly the Vardus 300's which are a step down from the 400's are a few quid more expensive on the superfi site.

Certainly do look the business(although I don't like the finish) but personally a little cautious without any personal recommendations.

Re: Tannoy F4 for 120 .. anything better to consider at this price ?

If you call the main RS customer service number (0845 900 1230) they will be able to tell you exactly which stores still have stock of the Tannoy F4's. you may find a store somewhere close by with stock and the £30 price difference pays for a fair bit of fuel to go pick some up

I picked some up a couple weeks back after some recommendations on here and have to say for £120 they are stunning. I've added them in to an existing 5.1 setup and they have transformed it.

Gave the customer call line a shout but they were closed (only got home from work a few mins ago). As I live in Scotland there are only two stores according to their web site, but that 30 pounds would def cover some distance to pickup should any have a set in store

Thanks for filling me in on the others you are finding along the way Tetlee, much appreciated. Will have look about for some reviews and the like. Have to agree that Id be weary without some recommendations for them.

The search continues

Re: Tannoy F4 for 120 .. anything better to consider at this price ?

Hi there. i have been watching this topic, i am also after a set fo these tannoys.

Im not sure what stock level is in the stores around me (have 3 in 15 mile radius) but there normally good to have things in stock

To be perfectally honest i think there a bargain at £150 anyway

I currently have a set of tannoy f1 customs on there own and they thump so i hate to know what these babies would be like

Unfortunately i downgraded from seperates for space reasons but im so depressed im going into rs next week to buy a new amp and these babies if i can get my hands on them

Re: Tannoy F4 for 120 .. anything better to consider at this price ?

Just to let all know that I did manage to get a hold of another one of the reps at RS and asked him a lil more about the F4s... he said that they had been completely cleared out (including show room demo units). I asked if I could reserve at the sale price and he said that even if they were to get more in he couldnt hold a sale price as it would only be for current stock. He also said that being honest he didnt know if they would still be getting any more F4 stock in the future.

Just thought Id let you know Tetlee that he did say that he could have let a pair of Cambridge Audio S70s go for 176 pounds rather than the stated 199 in the show room. Had a look at the Warfdales but its a 6Ohm speaker and my Yamaha 1500 manual says not to connect 6Ohm with 8Ohm as it may cause a prob in the amp (though I should go and give it a more thorough read than just a scan)

Going to have to sit and wonder if its worth paying the 164 for a F4 set at another retailer ... or look for something that may possibly be better at the same price. I should have changed the thread to read "165" rather than the "120" hehe. Just begrudge the extra 46 pounds for the F4s seeing as they were 120 ... still snooze and loose I suppose. Only bugger is I cant have a sub. Thing is I could keep saving and going "just another 25 pounds" each time but its a slippery slope

I bought 2 sets of floorstanders, and the matching centre.....hooked up with a song str-DG820........and i must say......its great.

Thats its.

Its great.............a entry av receiver, 4 floorstanders, centre...all for £490.......doubt you'll beat that anywhere, or with any system ( in my opinion !)

Have to say that you got one heck of a bargain there !!!

I've been keeping my eyes peeled for anything close to that kind of a bang for buck ratio but so far nothing has come up. Just wondering if I should chance RS getting in more stock but with SuperFi stating that their next delivery would be in March for the apple I dont know if I can wait that long for the possibility that RS do get more

so RS generally don't have any in stock even at £150? or they've just stopped doing them for £120

will have to pop along next week (out of the country at the mo), see what they got

From what the chaps in the store told me the two stores in Scotland and their warehouse are completely out of stock and are unable to say if they will get any more of the F4s in stock even after the sale is complete.

Am hoping that they will get more in, though if they do I reckon that it will only be at 150

Personally, I am wary of any speaker manufacturers guarantees. From experience with Mission, a failed driver was caused by the amplifier not a manufacturing fault and I had to pay. This is despite the Denon amp and Mission speakers being compatible power wise.

Perhaps other speaker manufacturers are less prone to passing the buck but based on the almost trivial replacement cost of the driver(I purchased & fitted it)compared to the cost of the speakers, I would have expected Mission to just replace it in the guarantee period.
