Tannoy F4 for 120 .. anything better to consider at this price ?
Hi folks
I have seen the deal at the moment at RS who are selling Tannoy F4 floor standers for 120 and was wondering if there was anything I should consider in the same price range before nipping on the phone to reserve a set ?
Though chances are that I'll be on the phone faster than a bat out of hell to reserve a set as soon as they open hehe

Says £150 on their website. (is this an in store price?)
I've heard them, and if you can get them for £120 it will be a true bargain.
The do go low, and are easy to drive with a smaller amp/mini system etc.
Once run in, you will find they are stunning with a wide, open and transparent sound.
The treble never sounds harsh, and the sound is just so effortless.
They are dynamic without being in your face.
I wouldn't describe them as exciting though, rather i would say they they are refined/restrained.
This isn't a bad thing, as they don't fatigue you like some of the cheaper speakers in this price range.

Re: Tannoy F4 for 120 .. anything better to consider at this price ?
Thanks for the reply guys!
As Willian said they are down for a special at the moment ... was advertised at 120 in some of the HiFi mags out there, from what I remember it was in "Hi-Fi Choice" and prices are valid from 7th December 2008 to 13th January 2009 (but my memory may be wrong hehe)
Will give the local store a call and see if I can get them at the same price as William.
I'll be driving it of a Yamaha 1500 so should be interesting to hear it rather than through the temporary Acoustic Solutions bookshelf speakers I got to tide me over till I got some floorstanders
-C
EDIT: Just called all the stores in Scotland and they are no longer in stock anywhere. Will be getting more in but only after the special for 119 is finished <cries>

Can you not pay for them now and just await the new stock?

Does that mean they will stock them at £150 again or retail prices?

I can only say that on or around the 7th of December I was able to walk into the Guildford branch clutching my HiFi mag and walk out with two pairs plus centre.
Prior to reading their sale advert I had no intention of even buying speakers but that changed.
Unfortunately for that price I am sure they were selling quickly and he who hesitates is lost etc etc.
I am surprised they are getting more stocks to sell at the pre sale price as I surmised in must be the end of the line for Tannoy F customs, hence the bargain price.
However, it has now led me to order a Tannoy TS12 sub so it was the F4's that got me on the hook and now I am being reeled in!

Well, if you can afford £165, try Superfi.co.uk
Keep in mind that HiFix.co.uk is still selling them for £282 per pair. Even the SuperFi price is still good deal.

Will, i have no doubt some people got them for that price.
You got a great deal, and prove they did at least have some stock.
But sometimes retailers advertise "loss leaders" to get you in the shop.
"Loss leaders" are normally in very limited supply, so they don't lose too much.
Once you are in the shop, it makes it much easier to steer you onto something else.
If this offer was genuine, why wouldn't they let people pay now (at the offer price) and then wait for the new stock etc.

I do agree, sometimes I am tempted by an Argos sale price only to find the damn item is not in stock anywhere in driving distance.
This offer was even publicised on Hotukdeals with many people posting gleefuly on their resultant purchases.
Regarding new stock at the old higher price I cannot think of a satisfactory explanation other than that unbelievable price could not be sustained past the end of sale date.
If it was indeed a "loss leader" it would explain it. However, from numerous references on this Forum it appeared to me that they had large warehouse stocks that were moving very fast, hence my belief that it was the end of the road for Tannoy F customs.

If paying that then I wonder how they would compare to the Mission M33i's(whathifi seemed to like them), which are ten pounds cheaper than the Tannoy F4's at Superfi.

Re: Tannoy F4 for 120 .. anything better to consider at this price ?
When I called the local branch I asked when they would be getting more stock and he said "2 to 3 weeks" I asked if the current price of 120 would still stand as I was calling within the sale period and the sales rep said that they would reserve me a pair but they would be 150 as they arrive they would no longer be within the sale. Was completely gutted . Had I known about it earlier I'd have gone in but as luck would have it I found out too late ...
I was considering the TDL Saturn 10 floorstanders in their stead as they are now on special at 99 quid ... dont know how they hold against the Tannoy F4s though ... anyone have any views / coments ??.

These look like a very good deal at £179.99, although can't find a single professional review for them so perhaps too risky.
