Speakers for Sony BDP S550

Hi,

Can anyone recommend some good speakers that would suit the new Sony BDP S550 that I bought?

Re: Speakers for Sony BDP S550

You cant just connect speakers to the 550, you need a Reciever or Amplifier & Speakers

Re: Speakers for Sony BDP S550

I have a Philips LX3950W surround sound which is a few years old. Do you think that this will be Ok or do you think that I should look for something of better quality?

Re: Speakers for Sony BDP S550

That is a all-in-one system and by the looks of it, it has 1 co-ax 5.1 input which will require some form of conversion.
I would suggest a new system and as it is a all-in-one you will need to change the lot. So the question is "Budget"?

Re: Speakers for Sony BDP S550

Well not to sound patronising it would not be great but providing it has either optical or Coaxial ext. inputs then it will work with you 550, however you will only get the Standard Dolby Digital (and DTS if it does that) & not the HD sound formats which are far superior. (Dolby True HD & DTD HD MA) these are only available through the HDMI outlets or PCM via the Analogue outs.
So yes in reality you need a more up to date Receiver.

Just out of interest why did you go for the 550 & not save yourself money on the 350? the 550's only real advantage is the 5.1 Analogue outs
If you had an older Amp. with 5.1 inputs I could understand it as it would have given you DTS MA decoding where the 350 can only Bitstream it to the Amp.

The 550 has Coaxial & Optical output like the 350

Re: Speakers for Sony BDP S550

I now live in portugal and there really isn't the choice that you get in the UK. I bought it from Radio Popular and they did have the 350 when I first went there, but when I went back to buy it they only had the 550 in stock so I bought that instead.

I had ordered a Sony KDL40W4500 from Redcoon.pt but they have let me down on pre Christmas delivery so now I have to wait until after Christmas until I buy a TV here in Portugal.

If I have to buy a new surround sound to match the Sony, I need to know what to look for as this isn't really my speciality.

Re: Speakers for Sony BDP S550

Ok makes sense now about the 550, not really a problem just perhaps better spec. than you actually needed, but an excellent player anyway

It depends very much on your budget really, something like the Onkyo 606 might be a good starting pont at just over £300 in the UK, plus then of course you will need speakers & a Sub woofer, the choice here is imense but dont have a clue what you have access to over there sorry

P.S. Excellent TV choice.

Re: Speakers for Sony BDP S550

As explained above you can use your S550 with your current system by using one of thse adapters and the optical output of the S550 into the coax input on your current system until you upgrade
