best pair of speakers for under £150

hi
i have been offered a pair of mordaunt short 906i floorstanders for £130. these are virtually brand new. now was wondering are there any speakers that are better then these in this price range. looking at second hand speaker i might be able to pick up some b&w 601 or mordaunt short 902i. would these be better?

Re: best pair of speakers for under £150

Hi the B&W's have poor bass response and as for the Mordaunts, I have no idea mate although I would like to know what they are like to. What type of music do you like? the reason i ask is because it will help in deciding what the best recommendations will be for you.

i just had a quick look for you and depending on whether you have a fairly good sized room for them then the floostanders you mentioned sound like a real bargain.

Re: best pair of speakers for under £150

music will most likely be rap/hip hop and niche which has a lot of bass. im also gonna be using these as the fronts for a 5.1 system.

I own a pair of 601's and whereas you're not going to get the bottom end that floorstanders will give you - the bass response is far from poor. In fact - I've been very impressed with mine for the last 9 years!

I back McCraque on this one.

I have a pair of 601 S3, and they give off a satisfying amount of bass.

And another supporter of the 601s, especially the later series. You will easily be able to get a great pair of s3s within budget. I think they're amongst the best bookshelfs for bass.

Re: best pair of speakers for under £150

never ended up getting the 906i as the guy sold it without telling me even though i said ill take it. now ive seen the kef iq5 se for around £200ish so have booked a demo with these against the tannoy f4 that are available in richersounds. can anyone recommend any other speakers that i should demo whilst im there.

im going to be using them as the front of a 5.1 surround sound. will be using it for music sometimes which would be hip hop, rap, grime and a bit of dance and house

Wharfedale DIAMOND 9.4 would be worth a listen but they may not be as ' exciting ' as you would wish given your taste in music.

Anyway Richers list them as a clearance bargain .... ' £149.95 Last Few TSP £299.95 SAVE £150.00 '

Re: best pair of speakers for under £150

had the demo between the kef iq5 se and tannoy f4. i found that the tannoys had better bass while with the kefs the vocals sounded better. now both of these didnt seem worth while upgrading to as to me the only difference between them and the jamos was that both floor standers where a little bit better with vocals and the bass was there with the speakers unlike the jamos where i have to use a sub to hear the bass.

i didnt get a chance to demo any other speakers but was wondering seeing as the type of music i listen to is bass heavy if i want speakers with decent bass around the price of £200 would i be better off buying a pair of bookshelf/floorstanders then saving up and getting a sub or are there any speakers around this price that are bass heavy?

thanks for any help

Warfedale have a warm full sound that some listeners think lacks attack. It all depends on your taste of course and they may well suit you and so you'd have to listen to them.

I doubt whether you'd get the bass that you want from any modestly priced Bookcase plus Sub-woofer combination and you'd need to price in speaker stands so I doubt whether you'd save on cost.

Those Epos ELS 303 look pretty good for the money but since they are from Superfi you may have difficulty finding a store thats conveniently close enough for you to arrange to audition them.

I've just noticed that Acoustic Energys e bay shop has a good deal on ....

" Acoustic Energy NEO 3 Speakers RRP £370 Light Oak " at ' price: £185.00 ' a link should be permissible since it's a shop rather than a private sale ...

Acoustic Energy NEO 3 Speakers RRP £370 Light Oak on eBay, also Standmount Speakers, Speakers Hi Fi, Home Audio Hi Fi, Consumer Electronics (end time 24-Dec-08 12:20:45 GMT)

You'd have to audition them at a dealers who have them in the showroom and then buy down to your price level from the web dealer.

You may well be better off saving up and raising your budget level to coincide with the New Year Sales. Below £150 and you are going to have trouble meeting your requirments for decent bass.

I'm expecting my Chauffeur's to turn up any minute now and so, in Haste ...

"ACOUSTIC ENERGY AEGIS EVO 3 AE EVO THREE FLOORSTANDING SPEAKERS ........

The AEGIS EVO Three is a 3 way, slim line floor standing speaker and the flagship of the series. With the new chassis type used on both the mid/bass and bass only drivers, the 160mm bass only driver now features a high efficiency alloy cone providing improved bass/mid integration with tighter low frequency control. The mid/bass driver is reflex loaded through a flared port to the rear of the cabinet, whilst the bass only unit is housed within a separate enclosure and reflex loaded through a high power flared port to the front baffle. This impressive flagship offers the discerning listener ownership of a product with awesome scale and depth, coupled with a level of detail, clarity and build quality unequalled by any other loudspeaker at the price.

Priced as pairs

Product variants Standard Price £273.99 "

You are a ' discerning listener ' aren't you?

https://www.forumhifivisual.co.uk/Sp...KERS_2087.html

Thats just on the web .. though I did get my Receiver from Forum .. and so you may be able to do better by searching. As always you must Audition your prospective Speakers. I'd say that you're after a Good tight but Deep Bass ... Gaud Help your Next Door Neighbor's .. with a clear Sharp vocal range. Since my taste runs toward Jazz and female vocals I didn't audition for Rap or Hip Hop when, eventually, I chose my B and W floor standers and so I'm a bit challenged in recommendations in this area ... you need contributions from fellow Rap Hip Hop fans.

As my personal contribution to a guide to comparative Speakerese like wot it is spoken .. or rather written ... have a look at this response ...

The Wharfedale Diamond 9.1s are excellent speakers, but verge slightly on the polite side - that doesn't strike me as an ideal characteristic for a diet of rap/rock. Definitely have a listen, though.

I'd also check out the Mordaunt-Short Avant 902i - they're full of punch, and in your price range (the list price is £150, but you'll get them for less).

The Q Acoustics line-up is also well worth considering.

Clare Newsome is Editor-in-Chief of What Hi-fi? Sound and Vision "

I'll stick in the link but links to magazine sites are always going to be inspected by Mods lest the forums hit copyright problems beyond ' fair quotation ' so you may have to follow clues.

What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision - Re: What is your take on the Wharfedale 9.1's?

I wouldn't go for her MS 902 recommendation though but, in your situation, would rather have a listen to the " Mordaunt-Short MS914 "

Mordaunt Short MS914 review - whathifi.com

Richer Sounds have those at £ 250 .....

I've Nothing to add on Speakers, BUT ... don't neglect your front end Equipment!

I use an Arcam CD player fed through my Denon 2808 Reciever .. with PURE settings .. essentially adding Nothing but Amplification to The Sound .. thus to my B and W 704 Front Left and Right Speakers for Music.

IT IS THE COMBINATION OF Player, Amplification and THEN Speakers that produces the SOUND that you Desire.

Of course, if you Desire a Combination of SOUNDS that includes Cinema or/and TV then it does become rather more complex ... Music ..Front Left and Right .. Home Cinema 5.1 .. Left and Right plus Center and Rears as well as Sub, in my case B and W HTM61 center and B and W 685 rears as well as BK Sub .. and you may well want DVD with a balance toward MUSIC ... " HELL FREEZES OVER " The Eagles DVD .. must come out on Blue Ray one of these days .... and so on.

Ain't it FUN?

Another vote for the Tannoy Mercury F4 Customs here

They are a fantastic speaker and an absolute bargain at £120 at Richer Sounds.

I have got myself 2 pairs and the matching Tannoy Mercury FC Custom centre speaker for a cracking 5.1 setup all for £289.85 - bargain

That leaves me a nice budget for a subwoofer.

Re: best pair of speakers for under £150

seems like most people are together on the f4's !

lots of people on seem to be buying 2 pairs, along with the centre...for a 100% matched 5.1 ....

Looks at bank balance....2nd set ordered for friday pickup...........3rd pair....7.1 ? REALLY....hmmmmm

Not sure if my room is big enough for that. damn

truth be told....mine probably isnt big enough....but i LOVE the sound of these....and the thought of 2 pairs sends shivers down my back !

Im sitting here listening to crowded house, from MP3....2 fronts and centre....and they sound so good it'd make you weep !
