Is it in both speakers? If so, I'd suspect it's hum noise. If not, then swap both speakers, and see if it is the same speaker the one with the buzz. If it is, then the speaker is damaged. Otherwise, it can be the amp damaged, or you may just be picking up some noise.

Then swap speakers and see if it comes on the same one.
Is the buzz also there when you stop the music, or only when playing bassy lines?
And if you turn off the amplifier?

Re: Buzz on Castle Severn Mk2 Speaker ( is the drive unit gone ? )

This does NOT sound Good! I have a similar problem. My Castle Harlechs were recently Challenged by a Blue Ray copy of 'Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy ' that when played by my Samsung 1400 produced a bad case of ' Motorboat ' sound ... popping noises very like the sound of an out-board motor .. that seems to have have upset one of the Harlechs, even though said Castle H was supported by a newly bought BK sub ... in matching Mahogany veneer: BK used to supply subs to Castle before Castle went Bust.

I now have a Castle that has a Buzz in certain mid range, usually voice frequencies, and so I rather suspect that.. we share a Problem.

Castle is No More. The Name has been taken by A N Other but the factory, the management of subsidiaries - SUB get it ? - and the Building itself are now Yesterday, and baring my buying bits from e-bay and old Castles of similar vintage ... What to Do?

Your speaker like mine ... done the swapping from one side to t'other thing .. does sound to be usable within certain parameters But, Dunno about you but I am now looking about for a Front Speaker Combo - I use a Castle Keep Center - that will produce a similar, but up-dated and Cinema Surround Sound Proof, Sound to that which I have enjoyed from my Castles for the past ....SOB .. 12 Years.

I'm looking at the Monitor Audio Thread and also considering KEF ... don't want to but it looks like needs must since that Buzzing Sounds like Slow Speaker Death to me. Damn .. and to think of the trouble that I went to to get a matching veneered Sub from a compatible manufacturer ... it was only in conversation over the phone with a BK tech that I discovered that BK was Castle subs in all but name. I'd really like to discover that someone else has been producing Castle Front Floor Standing Speakers on the Sly as it were but that really would be asking too much.

That's a real pity.

But there is hope, AFAIK Castle will be soon back in business. Maybe the new speakers won't be as good, but at least they should be able to provide spares. The website is still running, so maybe you could drop an email asking about spares...

I'm tempted BUT ... when something starts to go with this sort of Vintage gear then you always wonder whats going to Go next.

I haven't researched it deeply but I did read a report from a Castle owner who actually went to the Castle factory to pick up a speaker from the receivers ... I think that it was a Bastion .. and discovered that the factory was in very poor condition and had been thus for some time. According to that report, and other such reports on web logs, the entire stock of spares had disappeared and that would seem to be borne out by the odd bits that appear on e-bay. It has been some time now since Castle Passed Away and its staff have dispersed, its stock has vanished and ...so on. Any new Castle Speakers will be very New indeed and will have no continuity with the old product line. All very Sad, but these things do happen and I'm hoping that my old speakers hold on long enough for me to fill my Piggy Bank with enough to buy replacements .. but What Will replace Castle?
