My advice

If you have the manuals from both sets of speakers, if not they are easy to find on ebay and other web resources, then you need to make sure the crossover frequencies for the two models are the same, then the impedance, and also the power rating per side. My logical educated guess is all will be the same, and you should be able to plug them right in, but don't take my word for it. If the power rating is close but not exact, that should be ok. I would recommend also contacting Bose, I'm sure they would help as well.

Spec wise, that's not an issue - they're spec'd pretty similarly. The trouble is, the Acoustimass module for the 5's are designed for 2 speakers... You can't add another pair into the same connectors...

Are you trying to use the both sets at the same time for added power?

If so, the only real way is to use both modules... connected into the outputs of your amp. That is, if the amp has 2 sets of speaker outputs

5- iv

I wasn't certain if the 5-IV was a two speaker set up because when I owned the 5-III's Bose came out with a set up for 5.1 right afterwords. I thought maybe this was the question. I recommend against connecting extra speakers to the same connector.

Yeh the 3 and the 5 are both 2.1 systems. The 5.1 that came out after yours would have been the Acoustimass 6 system.

Back to the main question, both systems are 4 ohms. Meaning, firstly, do not connect more than one pair of cubes to the acoustimass module. Secondly, don't connect both entire systems to one amp, as doing so will drop the impedance down to 2 ohms.

Any chance of some more detail as to what you already have, and what you are trying to achieve kh4w4r?
