Wharfedale moviestar 65+ 5.1 system

Came across these and just wondered if anyone knew anything about them?

They look as if they could be a possible alternative to the £200 5.1 sets such as the Tannoy SFX 5.1?

Got the speakers this afternoon and spent a few hours getting everything together.

I have nothing to compare these to apart from a crappy LG all in one.

The wharfendales obviously blow these out the water. The sound is very crisp and sharp and I can pick sounds out that I have not heard before.

Put Transformers on and it was excellent. The sub was so bassy and it was barely turned up.

I will need to tweak it a bit still obviously, but to me they are gunna be a pretty good set of speakers. I contacted the AV Bristol where I ordered from, for advice on connecting the sub to the 507 and the guy said that you will not get much better speakers for the money.

The speakers feel very made and solid. Great looking bits of kit especially if you have a little bit of retro style furniture etc...

Center

sub with no grille

Back of sub

Back of satellite

Front of sat

One the four included wall mounts

To sum it all up, im over the moon with em! The tannoy sfx5.1 will have to be a hel of a speaker to better these for the money.

Please feel free to ask any questions.

Chris

Brilliant, thanks for the pics. Can you just confirm that the brackets only move horizontally and not vertically.

Looks good in black, that was what I was looking at.

The brackets are like a half ball joint if you know what i mean. They will move from side to side and kinda pivot up and down a little bit.

They are good in black. glad I chose it now.

I used this:

Gold-Plated 2-into-1 Phono Adaptor : Phono Adaptors : Maplin

and this:

http://http://www.maplin.co.uk/Modul...ModuleNo=35898

was told by av bristol to get a decent quality cable so got the better of the two phono leads.

WOW, Very happy with these, Replacing my old Sony Davs550, these also blow it out the water, cant really say anything else that ingsy1981 hasn't already said. Single phono cable was ok for the sub. Speakers fitted onto my stands that i used for the sony speakers so i now just have to spray them black to match these speakers. Away for now to watch a movie and enjoy the sounds. Will also try to get some pics up later. Sorry I cant go into more detail about the performance but I am new to separates and haven't heard any other sets to compare with but would deffo recommend these. Thanks to dicklodge for the initial post on these cos I had not came across them before.

i want to connect my pc, my ipod and also my xbox.
my pc has got an inbuilt sound card and so it does not have an optical out.

Could someone who has these speakers please answer a query for me?

All the photos I have seen of the centre speaker are without a grill fitted, does it come with a grill and is the Wharfedale badge the right way as it is on it's side?

Regards mipmip.

All speakers come with grill, the centre speaker grill is slightly different so the badge is the correct way round when the speaker is on its side.

I am also looking at buying this 5.1 speaker set, i have a yamaha rx-v465 av receiver, could anyone help me as to weather the speaker set would be a good match for this model?
I mainly want them for Blu-ray, PS3 gaming and general tv watching,
my previous surround was one box panasonic sc-pt850, will the yamaha & wharfedales blow this system out of the water?
or should i save my pennys and get maybe somthing like wharfedale daimond 9.0 speakers (although this would take me some serious time to save for!)

im sorry for all the noob questions but i really am noob to all this stuff!!
help would be greatly appreciated as im really gettin a headache now!!

You may have a problem with setting the crossover with these speakers and the Yamaha.

The according to the spec, the crossover needs to be set at 150HZ and i'm not sure what settings you have on the 465, but on my Yamahas, the setting jumps from 120HZ to 160HZ, so no 150HZ setting.

you would need to set the crossover at 160 so would lose the frquency range fro 150 -160 HZ. In reality this may not be a problem as the frequencies don't suddenly cut off, they gradually decrese below the specified frequency.

Many people are using speaker systems with this limitation and it still sounds good to them and it is a problem common to many of the popular budget speaker systems. Interestingly, the sony H800 gives more flexibility in this are and there wouldn't be a problem with the sony H800

Dante? :) - Crossover dilemma Tannoy SFX5.1 & Onkyo 577

On a separate issue, I find the wharefdale speakers a little on the warm side tonally, so personally, I wouldn't want to pair them with a similarly warm Yamaha amp, though personal preferences apply to sound, so that combo may work for you.

There's nothing wrong with the amp, it's the limitation of the budget speaker sets. If you read the full thrad i linked to, you'll see that someone with an Onkyo has a similar problem with the Tannoy SFX 5.1 set.

Dante? :) - Crossover dilemma Tannoy SFX5.1 & Onkyo 577

Are you looking to upgrade the whole 5.1 set or just some of the speakers and what budget do you have? What are your current speakers?

There are still some of the discounted individual QA 1000i series around, which would work well with the Yamaha and you may be able to do a progressive upgrade and end up with a much better sound over a period of time.

ahh ok,
well im upgrading form a "one box" panasonic home cinema system, i havent got any speakers for my yamaha at the mo, im buying my first set, i have a budget of about £200 (at least until a month or two when il have a bit more money) should i maybe buy a set of front speakers and gradually buy the rest of my set up as i can afford it?
the only reason i was looking at the moviestar65+ is because it looked like a easy cheaper way to get all my speakers lol!

really appreciate all this advise by the way

ahh ok,
well im upgrading form a "one box" panasonic home cinema system, i havent got any speakers for my yamaha at the mo, im buying my first set, i have a budget of about £200 (at least until a month or two when il have a bit more money) should i maybe buy a set of front speakers and gradually buy the rest of my set up as i can afford it?
the only reason i was looking at the moviestar65+ is because it looked like a easy cheaper way to get all my speakers lol!

really appreciate all this advise by the way
If you want to go down the front set of speakers route, which I think is a good one, you could look at these. They are heavily discounted because of a new range, so you should buy the front three speakers to ensure tonal matching across the front soundstage, but when you buy the surrounds later, there is no need to have an exact match, so the new range would be fine. Similarly with the sub; that can be from any decent sub supplier.

A little over budget at £220 but you would have a really good set of front speakers.

If you can't fit floorstanders in (though they would be better and help with the initial lack of a sub), these bookshelf speakers could be used as front L&R but they really should be run in conjunction with a sub as they don't go down down as far as the floorstanders, frequency wise and until you get a sub, will miss out on frequencies below 68HZ. The 103i floorstanders go down to 48HZ.

Ah...sorry but doesn't 150 come between 120 and 160????

Or did you mean 120 AND 160, rather than 120 TO 160?

If you set the crossover in the amp, then it is going to be consistent across all the speakers. So, if the range really is FROM 120 TO 160, there shouldn't be a problem.
