Playstation3 and PC surround sound - What is the cheapest and best option?

Would it be possible to conect a ps3 to a good PC sound card and run the sound through good surround sound pc speakers? I am only asking as I cannot really afford a amplifier and I am in the process of building a new pc. If it is possible what would the quality be like and what would be the best way to achieve it?

Im guessing the ps3 has optical out?
Id get a soundcard that has optical in & your sorted.
My mate did it with a fairly cheap creative card on his xbox & a set of logitec 5.1 speakers, I was sceptical coming from an av route but the sound is fine.

Hi Laser_frog,

Instead of connecting the PS3 to a sound card, why not try something like the Logitech Z5400 (http://www.kikatek.com/product_info....source=froogle)? I bought some recently for my PS3 and they're excellent. They have two optical inputs and a PC input also, and at around £150.00 they're very reasonably priced too
