recording from a sky + box

I am trying to record TV programs from my sky + box via s-video and the optical out. The video component is fine, but I can't get the sound to come out through my computer speakers. The computer is detecting the optical input but I can't hear anything. I'm not sure which sound card I have other than it is a realtek or at least uses realtek HD drivers.
I'm also not sure whether I have the right software to do the job, can anyone recommend a good video capture program?
