W995 RSS feeds - Ticker?

I'm signed up to 2 different feeds and have them scheduled to update every day at 8pm. When they've updated the "Ticker" shows up on the home screen, but if i Hide the ticker, i can never get it back up again till the update the next day!

I can't find an app anywhere on it that brings up the feeds as and when, without leaving the ticker open on the home screen. When i go into the browser and click the Web Feeds link, it takes me into my photos through the Media interface. Should there be a Web Feeds icon in the Media list? (i.e Photo; Music; Video; Games; TV; WEB FEEDS; Settings?)

Any thoughts?

Hi - I have the same sort of problems that once I add a web feed i.e. radio4/best of today podcasts directly onto the phone and then select a time to download the podcasts i.e. 7pm, made sure the settings for download automatically and No to local, when I check the phone after 7pm the ticker has been updated with the new podcasts but when I click on the ticker and select the podcast I then have to download the podcast before I can listen to it. To me this crap and it should download the podcasts at 7pm!!!

Am I missing something here and the podcasts should automatically download wifi to the phone?

Also another point - When you do download the podcast via the ticker and start to play it you cannot do anything else on the phone i.e. text message, menu, settings etc - nothing!!! It stops the podcast - now that is rubbish!!!

Anybody else has comments.

I have since phoned up Sony Ericsson with regards the fault and third level support called back, after going through some features on the phone it looks like the orange firmware on the W995 has bug's.

Next question - does anybody know how to flash a generic firmware onto the W995 i.e remove orange firmware and install the standard sony ericsson W995 firmware.

I got mine straight form CPW, so it's not got Orange firmware, but when i updated mine i just used the software you download from the SE website.

The software on the disc also tells you if there's an updated version available - and has a link to where to download it from. It's very simple and doesn't take that long.

Re: W995 RSS feeds - Ticker?

Hi Kev, Have you figured out the web feeds yet?

I'm having the same trouble as you, I have a TV option under media where Web Feeds should be, all info/docs/manuals etc point to the Web Feeds and nothing regarding the TV option that I have (which contains BBC iPlayer and is self explanatory, just weird it’s not documented).

And like you if I select the Web Feeds from the browser I’m taken into my Photos through the Media interface.

How did you set up the feeds initially, I’m even stuck working that out.

SIM free (R1EA033) on Vodafone.

Re: W995 RSS feeds - Ticker?

I've just got this phone on O2 and it seems that has to do with the customisation.
My son has one bought from Carphone Warehouse, SIM free and the customisation is western europe. It is missing the web feeds under menu-media.
Mine on O2 is SIM free but the customisation was telefonica UK, but was missing other stuff including google maps that the Carphone warehouse phone had.
I had it flashed generic which restored the web feeds but I lost BBC iPlayer app. No worries I bookmarked the page on the BBC website.

So it looks like whoever orders the stock can request whatever customisation they like. The Carphone Warehouse 'generic' phones are not really generic.

Hi, sorry for the delayed reply, not on here often.

I haven't figured it out, i've just set the feeds to auto update once a day so i know if i accidentally hide the ticker it'll come back up when they download next.

I subscribed to mine my going to the websites of the feeds i wanted (the register and autosport) the RSS icon flashed up and then you can subscribe to it from the browser menu - this is the point when you can set the update interval too - or you can do that in the option of the ticker later.

That's interesting, i updated my firmware straight from SE and didn't lose anything (still not entirely sure what it actually did!).

I might be getting another one, this time on Vodafone but it'll probably be unbranded again because i'm going through CPW.

Hopefully at some point they'll fix this on a future firmware release, so far it's the only flaw i've found.

It might be unbranded but it seems like the company that orders them can still get the handset customised to a degree, which is why CPW phones, meant to be 'generic' have missing web feeds and a fully generic handset has got them but missing BBC iPlayer.<- Probably due to the fact the iPlayer is for UK only (copyright).

Re: W995 RSS feeds - Ticker?

Seems alot of customization floating about for the various firmwares..

My CDA (Customization Data Address) is 1224-1498 R2A which is Generic UK.
After some investigation CPW has there own CDA of 1224-8208 R2A.

My phone did not have Web Feeds and my phone was direct from Sony Ericsson.

You can see your software versions by pressing the following sequence ">*<<*<*" (without quotes and the arrows are the direction on the d-pad) then Service Info and Software Info.

Mine is currently :-
1224-1498 R2A
1215-7995 R1EA033
WESTERN EUROPE

I've seen a UK youtube vid with both Web Feeds and the TV/iPlayer folder/app which looks like generic firmware i.e. Vodafone or Orange havn't got the mitts on it and added the colours and icons.

Whats your Firmware & CDA Kev_180iE & JonUK?

Re: W995 RSS feeds - Ticker?

JonUK

You said you had your phone flashed, I'm guessing by some 3rd party software.

You have the wrong CDA format. Sorry to say that.
A correct CDA format for A2 phones should be 8 digits like xxxx-xxxx. x represents a digit.
SEUS will reject the phone, you will have the same message 'Update Not Available' forever, even if there is an update in the future.

BTW, check your 1E0W info on your customisation. It means '1 Errors 0 Warning' message. Don't worry, despite the warning, it does NOT affect your phone's performance. It's only a matter of 'Wrong Customisation' method, if I am not mistaken.

But i checked the other day and there's another update available from SE which i'm going to do at some point this weekend.

I rang the shop where I got it flashed & spoke to the person who flashed my phone. He said that although the CDA is incorrect the phone will still update through the SE update software as all it's looking for is the firmware revision.

Cheers
