HDMI lead connecting sky+ box to TV

Never posted for ages but here goes. My dad recently got a new Samsung LCD TV and connected his Virgin box to it with a HDMI cable. The picture is spot on!!! Got me thinking...If I connected my Sky+ box to my Sony Bravia with an HDMI lead instead of my scart lead would it make much difference? If so what make etc would people recommend??

The SKY+ does not have a HDMI output, you would need to upgrade to SKY+HD.

Hmm,

Regarding 'makes' of HDMI cable, there shouldn't be much to worry about here, the signal going down HDMI is digital, as opposed to analogue, so the make and quality of cable is more of a misnomer (or fear-driven marketing) than anything you should need to worry about.

No need - my opinion - for you to go spending £££s on an expensive HDMI cable... you may be best advised staying clear of the most basic of cables at the very, very low-end, but everything else should serve fine - especially if the run is not long, which it won't be.

But, as said above, you can't do it anyway from Sky+.

Moral is, I think, don't get ripped-off with expensive HDMI cables. No real need.

Cheers, DpM

Re: HDMI lead connecting sky+ box to TV

On the same theme as the OP, can anyone recommended a freesat receiver with an hdmi output that I can use with my viewing card to watch my normal Sky SD channels? I've got HD downstairs and am not prepared to pay the extra £10 HD multi-room fee for my bedroom tv but want the improved SD PQ as can be achieved with an hdmi connection to the receiver. The PQ via the hdmi cable from my Thompson HD box is much improved over the connection via the scart cable so want to replicate that upstairs. I could buy another Sky HD box but I won't be paying for their HD and I'm not interested in the hard drive for recording stuff.

thanks

You can only use Sky viewing cards in Sky boxes, you can't use them in freesat boxes.

Although standard Freesat boxes don't have a CAM slot the specs for the Foxsat PVR state

Pause Live TV
Rewind Live TV (on channel viewing)
Favourites List
ITV HD & BBC HD
Subtitles
Common Interface Slot for extra Pay TV Services

So, if the CI slot works (?) it should be possible to use a Dragon/T-Rex/Diablo CAM (around £70 - £100) and use the Sky card in it. The card would still need updating in a Sky box.
However, I have seen rumours (nothing confirmed) that the new Sky cards to be issued this year will prevent their use in emulator CAMs and a Videoguard CAM is not available - wait and see on that one.

Thanks for the reply, will wait and see what Sky do with regard to the additional HD multi-room fee.
