Sky installation questions

Hello,

I am moving to a new flat which is not in a cable area (I am with Virgin now, I don't like them but not having to have a dish is a bonus when renting)

I have a couple of questions I was hoping people can answer.

1. The new flat doesn't have a dish as far as I am aware, if I get permission to have one installed, I am slightly concerned that due to buildings to the south, I will not get a good enough signal. How can I check this? What if I order and they try to install and it doesn't work, do I have to pay for their attempt at installing it?

2. What needs to come into the house? I imagine a single cable comes from the dish, but I also am guessing that this involved drilling holes into walls etc. Is this the case? If so, do the Sky engineers run the cable into the house, drill all the necessary holes etc?

3. Who owns the dish once it is installed? Would it be beneficial for my landlord as it would always be there and could be used as a selling point for her in the future? Or is is simply drilling holes and making a mess for no reason?

I think that is it for now. Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: Sky installation questions

Sky will do just about everything, holes, dish up, everything to get your sky. How close are the buildings? The dish, theoretically becomes the property of the account holder, so, strictly speaking you could take it with you.

Re: Sky installation questions

Thanks for your answer.

I need to go and scope it all out a bit again and see if it would be viable. It would need to go on the front of the house so not sure.

Can anyone answer my question about what money I lose if Sky cannot get a good enough signal? Can they find this out BEFORE drilling holes and everything?

Re: Sky installation questions

yes, he can check you're able to get a signal before he does any drilling.

No, if there's the slightest doubt, the installer will simply walk away from the job. They don't check "borderline", even though there may be no problem at all. They simply aren't allocated enough time. Make sure there's a clear view at about a 20 degree upward angle on a bearing of about 30 degrees east of compass south.
