Simple installation question

Hi,

First post and straight forward question I hope.

I am moving my TV and av gear from one side of the living room to the other. So I need to or re-route the sky cable so that the cable is at the other end of the living room. I could pin the cable along the skirting and around to other side of the room - but I think looks quite messy.

Ideally, what I would like to do is take out the cable re-route the it from the outside and fthen feed the cable into the house from outside closer to the new location of teh TV/AV stuff There is enough existing length of cable to be able to pull it out, re-route and feed through to the house again.

The simple question is what type/size of drill bit do I need to drill a hole from the outside of the house straight into the living room...

Thanks

Re: Simple installation question

I did the same myself, all I did was I had a drill that was a couple of mm thicker than the cable and longer than 1 width of brick then carefully measured from a point like a window cill or other such thing, drilled from the inside and then measured from the same point outside, drilled that then took the end off ( it just unscrews ) then fed it through. doing it this way also stop you breaking the surface of the wall like the bloody sky engineers. then seal it with silicon and jobs done

It's a victorian terrace.

oldnewbie, thanks for your suggestion - not sure I could measure and mark that accurately and so would prefer to drill (very carefully!) straighthrough. I Kno wI need to get hold a particular (big) drill bit just don't know aht size/type

It depends on what cable has been used in your installation - there are quite a lot of different cables around - the most used cable would need a 10mm drill BUT you need to actually measure the cable that has been used in your installation.

Before everyone tries to make this sound a bit too complicated for you, I will explain, I am a builder by trade that is why I tried to persuade you to do it the way I said ( Its neater ) But failing that all you have to do is open a door and measure from the outside surface to the inside surface ( all houses can be different ), And that gives you the thickness of the wall, Then add 2 inches for the drill chuck to hold and 2 inches to break through the wall ( ie my wall thickness is 11inch +2 + 2 = 15in but you wont get a drill that size it will be 16inch or40cm ) so you do the same and get the nearest size masonry drill that is just over your measurement. as far as thickness goes just cut off a 2inch section of cable ( after you have unscrewed the end off ) and take it to the shop and get a masonry drill the length you want but 3mm thicker than your cable. hope this helps. ps cable installers will have a masonry drill that is about 50 to 60cm but for a one off install would be too expensive, so just follow my instructions and you wont go far wrong
