Digibox or Dish/LNB/Cable problem?
I'm using an old Panasonic Sky box. I've had a few problems with it in the past, but its been ok for a while.
Earlier this week, I was going to watch something during the afternoon. Brought the box out of standby, only to find that I had the channel banner (and the correct time on the time display), but a blue background and no picture. All the channels I tried had the same problem. I was able to get into the setup menu and found that I had around 50% signal strength, 75% plus signal quality and that the lock was ok. Just no picture...
I have another box (a Thomson 4212 that I picked up from eBay a while ago, haven't used it much), so I pulled the Panasonic and put the Thomson in its place. It seemed to work fine, so I left it.
That night, I set my VCR up to make a recording from the box. When I came down the next morning, I found the box had shut down, after recording only 20 minutes of the movie. I set it up to make another recording, and sat and watched. When the VCR activated the box, I got nothing but coloured rectangles. I was able to get a picture (eventually), but I could not get any of the station banners, nor could I get to any of the menus. I could change channel, but only by entering the channel numbers.
After a reset, the box was ok, but I'm far from sure that I trust it anymore.
I don't have access to another dish to try plugging the boxes in, and I'm not at all sure what the problem could be. The fact that both boxes had problems (though very different ones) makes me think it could be a dish or lnb problem, but the fact that it cleared (and at present I'm using the Panasonic digibox without apparent problems) makes that seem a bit unlikely.
Other than going out and buying a another box, can anyone suggest how I might narrow down the source of the problem? Has anyone else had either of the problems I've seen - either banners/menus without picture or picture without banners/menus?
Thanks for any help...
paul.
