That's always been the case I'm afraid - also aplies to recorded sport programmes!

With Virgin Media (previously Telewest), this is not the case. You can record lots of Sky movies, then get movies turned off, and you can still watch your recordings

Re: surely this is'nt legal ?

It is all in the T&Cs. The CS rep should have pointed out that any saved programs will be unviewable.

First you only need an active subscription to watch a programme and so when you come to watch a fully encrypted digital bitstream recording you need the subscription which supports that programme. If the SKY+ recorded like TIVO, DVDR or VHS then the data would not be encrypted but would suffer from a second round of compression and of course lose DD audio etc.
Second the SKY+ service is seperate to the hardware, you buy the hardware then pay extra to unlock certain features, stop paying and those features go away.

Look at it like SKY does, the recording is identical to the live broadcast, you need a subscription for watching a live broadcast so you need a subscription to watch the identical recording.

Very surprised CS didn't inform you of the fact since that is a retention tactic and that you didn't understand how SKY+ works.
