Will the World Cup be screened in High Def?
Becuase if it's not then I am not sure I'd be overly happy at just pre-ordering Sky HD
The selling point, for me, is seeing the football this summer on HD.
Anyone got any ideas?

Everything i have read seems to point to yes (well BBC coverage anyway, don't think ITV screened games will be)
However I don't mean to criticise but if this was the reason you pre-ordered shouldn't you have checked before ordering?

So the BBC have confirmed that they will be showing the world cup in hi def.
Does this mean that if we buy a sky hd box we will be able to get the BBC hd broadcasts without paying the £10 per month sky hd subscription. ?

Yes. BBC HD is listed as freeview on the Sky webpage. The HD box will then cost you £399 instead of £299 though.

You won't currently be able to get the Sky HD box without a HD subscription. Don't expect to be able to get them from a third-party retailer for some months to come, probably after the WC is over and done with.

With the limited supplies I don't think Sky are taking pre-orders without the requirement of a HD subscription. Once the hysteria has died down then yes I'm sure the boxes will be freely available for £399 but that as I said would be likely be after the WC has finished.

Sky list the box without sub at £399.
See also previous threads about Sevenoaks being allocated 2000 boxes in a similar time frame to what Sky are saying - May
And another dealer I spoke to also said he expected boxes in April/May

I have a an LCD with built in freeview. Will I be able to view HD via freeview for BBC1?
I guess the answer maybe "no", I had some mate that told me if your freeview box can handle MPEG4 you might.
As for watching the World Cup in HD, I don't really want to see Rooney, Terry and Co with such clarity, maybe when Brazil play if they show the crowd, that is when HD really comes in useful.

Will have to wait and see if they're able to sell these initial boxes without a HD sub.
