BBC Confirm Hi-Def World Cup

So the BBC have confirmed that the World Cup will be broadcast in Hi-Def. Does this have any implications for Sky HD? Surely they can't allow Telewest to be the only Hi-Def outlet for the World Cup.

I hope that "selected group of viewers" means everyone with a TVDrive, SKY+ HD or a standard mpeg4/dvbs2 HD receiver and not a subgroup within those camps!

They are stating the first HD game to be 7th June - let's hope the beeb know something we dont, as they are also saying the service will be available via satellite, so Sky need to get there butts into gear to get these things installed in the next 70 odd days !!

Nice to see they will show some Wimbledon matches in HD as well to them.

Flaming heck, I'd hoped to not bother with SkyHD but if the WC is in HD then I'm going to have to...ah well, it's only money!

Looks like it will be available to anyone with a suitable satellite or cable receiver, looking at their Web site. Unfortunately, it looks like it will end too!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/digital/tv/hdtv.shtml

"We will launch a BBC HD trial from mid 2006. It will include some of the best sport, drama, events and documentaries from BBC ONE and BBC TWO. BBC HD will be part time and show around two hours or more of programmes each day. The BBC's HD programmes will be free to anyone who has the right equipment – an "HD Ready" display and satellite or cable HD service and set top box. The BBC HD trial will last 6-12 months and have an end date so we can assess how it has gone."

All new innovations have been trialled by the BBC before making the service permanent. In the past this has included 625 lines, colour TV, nicam sound and teletext.

It's a pity if this means that people get sucked into buying into SkyHD (to pick up the BBC feed which would presumably be available on it) and then find they have to pay extra every month to Sky to continue to receive some HD transmissions after the beeb trial ends......

BBC really, really should have got 'Freesat' off the ground and made a song and dance about it offering HD as well. Bloody stupid move by ITV to back off and concentrate on terrestrial Freeview.

I like the bit in the original BBC online post about how HD cannot be fed over freeview because of a lack of 'airspace'!! God forbid if a HD signal crashed into an Airbus A380 and stopped me watching the World Cup!

To those watching the WC2006 in HDTV:

Can I come round?

I'll bring beer (or preferred beverage)

You will also reap the benefits of my amateur punditry

I'll bring my xbox!?!

I'll even let you win at Pro Evo...

I agree. I assume though that for the BBC HD channel to be approved there will need to be a HD free Sat type service up and running within the next 1-2 years. Also reasonably priced.

Yep.
The BBC can trial a service which is what this new HD offering will be however if they want to start a new channel on any platform they have to get permission. New charter starts next year and if the trial goes well I expect everything will be in place (paperwork wise) for them to go full time when they feel it's viable.

It would be shocking if the BBC were not broadcasting HD on Dsat FTA so you do not need to buy SKY hardware, those who are going to spend the money on HD in the short term would I assume know this

Reasonably priced means waiting for the early adoptors to create a viable market for the manufacturers to ramp up production, chicken and egg sorta thing
