Would I benefit by connecting Sky via Amp

Hello

I have just purchased a Cambrige Azur 540R AV receiver.

The amp gives the me the option of connecting sky+ to the amp via s-video and then feeding the signal into my plasma via a component cable.

Can anyone advise if the above connection would result in a noticable improvement in picture quality (I currently feed sky+ directly into the TV via s-video).

Thanks for any advice - I'm not too keen on dismantling everything and buying the necessary cables if the picture quality will be the same.

Cheers

Will your screen accept an RGB input? Surely they all do these days? Use that if you can. You can't get better from a Sky box. S-Video is decidedly second best.

And no, you will get no improvement from routing the S-Video via the amp, unless your screen is totally naff.

Thanks for that XXXX you've saved me from dismantling everything for nothing.

The tv does have RGB but the s-video connection just seems to give a better picture

Cheers

Have you turned on RGB output on the Sky box? If so apologies - its juts unusual (though not unheard of) for S vid to be better than RGB

Your amp will simply convert the signal from one format to another... it wont "improve it" to component as the amp cant make up the lost data from s.video.

In theory then the RGB scart (assuming you have either an rgb or fully wired scart cable and turned RGB on in the Sky menu system) is going to be the best picture quality with s.video (converted to component or not) second best.

In reality however there are other considerations... some screens handle different signal types better or worse. With my PD30 TV it has a known issues with handling RGB but is exceptional with component and good with s.video. With my setup s.video produced the best picture... I decided to let the amp to do conversion to component on the basis of a simplier wiring and 1 button source switching... I think it did give a slight picture improvement but that could just be me wanting to see an improvement.
