Thanks Martin

Effectively I have been rebooting because I unplug the box from the mains in order to stop the noise (althogth it is not particularly loud we can hear it in the night)

Any other suggestions please?

Well, now you've got me wondering what else you've omitted to mention - such as the make and model number from the label? As anyone who knows me will attest, I have little patience, a short attention span and a memory like a goldfish. Please provide as much information as possible and I (or someone else) might be able to help.

OK Martin here we go

Pace model 6.2.10 version 9F2120

Just to mention again the problem really only seemed to happen once it had been moved to the bedroom

Thanks again Sparkey123

It sounds as though the cooling fan is running all the time. If you leave it unplugged from the mains for a decent period of time, overnight say, does the noise appear immediately on plugging the box back in?

Does the box have enough space around it for adequate ventilation?

Well you didn't give me the model number from the label which I asked for. However, on checking my version list, I see that you have a BSKYB3100 receiver.

This is quite an old model and will probably be suffering from various "tired" components by now. The HDD itself should be replaced every 3 years. I'd recommend sending the receiver to Digifix for checking and refurbishment.

Faults that occur after a receiver has been switched off and allowed to cool down can often be traced to electrolytic capacitors or bad connections.

Dont think its a ventilation problem

Have left it unplugged on a couple of nights tnen watched TV for 3 hours then switched TV off and sky box to standby. But the box still hums away and does not totally turn off.

Any other thoughts?

Explain "does not turn off" - can you still get a Sky picture/audio on your TV or are you referring to the "hum"?

Thanks again Neil

I am referring to the hum.I turn the box to standby so the green button turns red

But even overnight the box hums away without going totally quiet

Very strange as this has only happened since moving it upstairs

You probably didn't notice it downstairs - noisier environment.

It is either the power transformer or the fan. The cheapest option is to live with it.
