Freesat from Sky recording now free

Whilst visiting Curry's today with intention of purchasing a Freesat box to replace my Sky+ box I was told that Sky no longer charge the £10 for use of the recording facility. Apparently they dropped the charge when HD box was introduced. Is this correct?

Re: Freesat from Sky recording now free

I think Sky dropped the charge for recording only if you subscribed to a premium package.

I'm pretty sure you won't get the box to record when used as a Freesat box.

Sky+ alone is £10 a month but comes free with any Sky subscription.

The Sky+ facilities, record, live pause etc are free if you subscribe to any of the Sky mixes. Otherwise you can pay £10/mo.

BBC HD, Luxe HD, CH4 HD and ITV HD on a box with the new epg, provided of course you have HD box. (You can't record ITV HD even if you pay the recording subscription)

Currently I only have DS Sky+ but am thinking about cancelling and just taking their free offering. If I did that and then got an HD box, would my card work or is the card different?

You don't need a new Sky card to work in a Sky HD box - but you do need the card pairing with the box to view premium subscription channels and to allow you to use Sky+ functionality on the Sky HD box. You also need to activate the HD Pack on your account and card, to allow you to view the HD Pack channels. Sky won't let you have a free Sky HD box if you don't subscribe to the HD Pack for at least 12 months.

So it I cancelled, bought a SH HD box, I could then get the free HD channels? Would I need to get the card paired to the box?

Not if you were cancelling your Sky subscription completely. You wouldn't be able to use Sky+ functionality, of course. No recording, pausing, series linking etc.

If you aren't cancelling completely, so would still be able to view some SD subscription channels and use Sky+ functionality, then the card would need pairing with the box, for recording purposes and if you subscribed to any premium channels.

Not bothered about recording. I just wanted to get an HD box and watch the free HD content (like the world cup next year)

The FTA channels do not require a card at all - they are FreeToAir

However, without a card BBC1 may default to London, ITV1 to West Midlands, FIVE will not appear on the EPG and will need to tuned in manually and be accessed through 'Other Channels'.
Whether you would get ITV-HD depends on the box and which EPG it has.

With a card you would get the correct BBC/ITV regions, FIVE will be on the EPG at 105, you'd also get Sky3 and Channel4HD but any enabled card should be OK
