Question Resolution for sky box?

What resolution does a standard sky box achieve?

I'm not sure if its 480i/p or 576i/p?

I'm in the UK by the way.

Many Thanks

Re: Resolution for sky box?

UK standard def is 576i but of course digital channels can vary from 480*576 to 544*576 to 705*576 and 720*576 resolutions.

Re: Resolution for sky box?

OK, if I wanted to be able to view a natural 576i source, as opposed to a 576i source deinterlaced into 576p, how would I achieve this?

I've read that you need a Sky+ HD box with component-out, then if you connect to it via component to the TV & set the resolution to Auto, it will display as 576i without deinterlacing.

Not sure if this is accurate, but is it true?

Cheers

Re: Resolution for sky box?

Use the analogue output from any SKY hardware even the SKY+HD outputs 576i on scart.

Not sure about the component offering 576i through it's own setup since I recall reading that connecting to a standalone scaler and blocking the input of 576p forces the SKY+HD to send 576i.
Of course given than none of current new boxes supplied have component makes this irrelevant leaving the RGB scart option for SD channels.

Re: Resolution for sky box?

So if I send a 576i signal to my tv, the tv will automatically deinterlace it to 576p?

If so, is there anyway to turn off this deinterlacing process within the TV's settings?

I'm looking at getting a Panasonic TX-42G10 or V10?

Thanks

Nope since a HD flat panel will scale it to the screens native resolution and de-interlace as the majority of flat panels in the simplistic sense are progressive by nature.

If you are worried about the TV's de-interlacing capability and it is important then you'll have to explore the relevant forums for user experiences on the two plasmas.

Re: Resolution for sky box?

OK...If I were to buy something like this:

http://www.lambda-tek.com/components...prodID=B148592

would this be able to upscale/convert my standard sky box's 576i signal into 576p before sending it to the tv?

Re: Resolution for sky box?

I think you misunderstood
A HD display will take a 576i source and de-interlace it but also scale it to it's native resolution, it can not do one or the other it has to do both otherwise you'll have a HD res screen but only a small squarish image in the center of the screen when viewing SD.

Now obviously an external scaler may be more powerful then the chip in the TV but then I'm talking about scalers that can cost a grand although older tech is much cheaper and still probably kicks the ass of the majority of chips in HD tellys

Re: Resolution for sky box?

Sorry, what I meant was if I use this product, will it take the 576i signal, deinterlace it to 576p, then send that 576p signal to the TV, which then forces the image to match the resolution of the TV?

And if so, is this more likely to provide a better picture?

Panasonic TX-P42G10 / TX-P42G10B Review

If you scroll down, it'll explain regarding the TV's lack of film deinterlacing capabilities & its troubles deinterlacing 576i to 576p.

Many Thanks

Re: Resolution for sky box?

Read a few blurbs for it and all they agree on is that it has 720p output, no word on 576p which is not a surprise since it's being sold as a method to connect a analogue source to a digital input display.

Personally it would not surprise me one bit if the device made no difference what so ever to the final picture produced, spending some serious money on a decent standalone scaler from the likes of DVDO would make a difference but then again a higher spec telly may also help.
Also be aware that a lot of issues in reviews may not be that big a deal in the real world usage for the market the TV is aimed at.

As for the Pana then go into the plasma forum, real world reviews from actual owners
