Not used for anything at the moment - some people say they can use them to charge their mobile phones. And lose the capital letters...

Re: SKY+ box / USB ????

Wow you have 2 usb ports. I have none.

Many times this has been asked on the forum, sometimes a search helps.!

I did have a pace box that I did charged my ipod from the usb then I got a failed modem issue and was replaced.

doubtful, as you have to decrypt the programme everytime you watch it from the sky HDD.

Then you'll also know that in the majority of boxes the ports weren't even wired up to anything inside the box. You didn't used to be called techgit did you? He claimed to work for Sky, and that he knew everything about Sky boxes, Sky CS, what engineers could and couldn't do, and he had a similar attitude to you. And he was banned from the site shortly after joining.

I said the majority of boxes - not all boxes. Some are wired up, that's how people can charge their ipods, some aren't. On Digital Spy there's a discussion going on about which manufacturers have connected the USB port to the Sky+ motherboard and which ones didn't bother, under instruction from Sky. Supposedly the initial spec said that any company who wanted to start manufacturing Sky+ boxes had to build at least one USB port in (from V3 onwards), so all future manufacturers designed the box front ends or back ends to hold the USB port, then Sky backtracked and said that they weren't necessary in the near future, at which point one of the manufacturers still went ahead with keeping the ports in the box casing, as they had already been designed, but didn't bother wiring the port to anything on the motherboard. One of the other manufacturers did connect the USB port to the motherboard, which is why it can charge your ipod. But it can't do anything else - maybe you could plug one of those PC coffee cup warmers into it - there was a novelty USB coffee cup warmer that came out a couple of years ago, basically a little mat that you stood your cup on, and it generated enough heat to keep your coffee warm by drawing on energy from the USB port in your computer.

Apologies for suggesting you were techgit, come back to haunt us all once more...

Re: SKY+ box / USB ????

sounds like this guy was not a very nice person.

anyway i have an amstrad and a thomson pvr3. it works on both.

im not sure whether pace boxes have usbs coz i have not encountered many over my time at sky, and now they got rid of all the pvr 3's in my call centre and given us 2's instead.

rather annoying.

Cool Re: SKY+ box / USB ????

Hi all.

Re: Amstrad Sky+ Box. Newly in Saturday, has the two USB ports and checked with USB drive and my mobile phone and neither has any effect. I'm assuming these later ones HAVE NOT had the wires connected inside. (No data or power). Any handy hints on my new toy appreciated.

You've resurrected two old threads and asked the same question.

The answers are already there.
If the USB posts aren't connected then AFAIK they can't be used for anything
