Getting HD, is my Sky+ mine to keep?

Hi all - and happy new year

I currently have Sky+, and Sky are installing HD next week.

What happens with my current Sky+ box, am I able to keep it? Is it mine to keep?

I currently have an old Sky box in the bedroom (not a PVR type) and use that for Freeview.

If I can keep the Sky+ can I watch freeview on it with only one feed from the dish?
If not, will the engineer stick the extra cable in as part of the install fee I am paying for the HD?

I did not really want to pay for Multi-room but if there is no other solution I might consider it.

Thanks

Re: Getting HD, is my Sky+ mine to keep?

new here but will try to help.

After 12 months the box is yours.

Yes you could swap the old box to your newer sky+ but you will not be able to use recording if you dont take multiroom. You can still use it with one feed to watch free to view and as its a newer box it may look nicer in place than the more dated one.Same goes for the cable,it wont be done unless you want multiroom. You could ask Sky man to do cash in hand for extra feed but if you dont want multiroom,no point as it wont record.

edit,

get it done cash from the sky man, then if sky drop sky+ sub you are ready to go.I have heard thay may stop charging but who knows?

Well I have had Sky+ for several years, however this box was installed a few weeks ago, as the last one went bad.

Not sure if that still counts as mine. . .

It's still yours. They took your old box away when they gave you the replacement. Keep it, sell it, use it. It's up to you.

BTW - you can't get Freeview on it. Freeview is only available via a TV aerial. But you will get Freesat channels on it - and there's a lot more available on Freesat than on Freeview.

Re: Getting HD, is my Sky+ mine to keep?

Thanks Broadz, yes I meant Freesat.

Hmm so if I decide to go for multi-room can I just tell/ask the engineer to fit it, or do I need to organise it with Sky first?

Might be better to get it done whilst the enigineer is there, so saving the cost of two visits. I presume I would not have to pay extra, as he will already be there?

Also with just Freesat will the box work with just one sat feed? - I realise that the PVR bit won't work.

Finally if I have Multiroom, do I need to pay for more subscriptions or for the (£10 ish/month) will I get all of my current subscriptions on the other box (minus HD of course) ?

Thanks again

Organise with Sky first. If the engineer is pushed for time, he won't be able to fit it in otherwsie. Sky shouldn't charge you extra for doing it, as they'll be getting an extra tenner a month from you for doing it. And it means that they can get the spare card posted out to you before the engineer arrives, so he can get both cards paired to the boxes before he leaves. You might even get the installation done cheaper (or free) - Sky have been known to waive the install fee if the customer gets multiroom.

Yes it will work with just one sat feed - but if you're only going for Freesat, you might as well keep the standard Sky box you've already got, and sell the Sky+ box on ebay. You'll get more for a Sky+ box than you will for a standard Sky box, and the Sky+ box won't give you anything that the standard box can't if used as a Freesat box.

The subscription will be a mirror of your Sky subscription (minus HD of course), and will entitile you to use Sky+ functionality on both the Sky+ box and the Sky HD box. So, in theory, you could be recording four seperate Sky channels at the same time.

You guys can shoot me if I'm wrong but Frying Tonight, you'll need to have a phone extension in your bedroom and have the extra multi-room box connected at all times but I'm sure sky will tell you this. Thats if you choose multi-room, no need for having it connected if it's freesat. It's to stop you getting multi-room then giving the box and a sat-dish feed to a neighbour.

Re: Getting HD, is my Sky+ mine to keep?

Thanks for all of your replies

Well I phoned Sky last night and said I wanted to get Multi Room.

The girl said she would need to cancel my HD install and then get a new date - so they could do both together.

I said no way - I have been waiting for 2 months for my HD date

She then said to have the Multiroom installed at a later available date would incur a further charge

I said no thanks, and could she tell me the next available date.

After a long hold, she finally came back on and said she had put a "Same day resolution" note on my account. So when the engineer comes to fit HD he can then ring Sky to get a job number, and then fit the Multiroom. With no extra charge.

Now why could she not have done that in the first place

Anyway, thanks for all of your advice, I am glad that I phoned Sky when I did, and finally managed to get a satisfactory resolution

Looking forward to some HD on my 60" Pioneer KRP-600A
