Poor PQ since Samsung EPG update - any answers ?

There are a few, like myself, from the main EPG thread with this noticeable drop in picture quality since EPG (picture is softer and grainier).

I was wondering if anyone had called Sky about it or had fixed it somehow ?

I have tried turning it off at the wall and a planner rebuild but it is still the same.

P.S. I have a Panasonic plasma.

Re: Poor PQ since Samsung EPG update - any answers ?

My Samsung box upgraded today - I totally agree with you. Picture quality on SD channels is now very grainy (significantly poorer) and there is also a reduction in HD picture quality too.

I have a Sony Z4500 and the picture with the old EPG HD box was fantastic on SD & breathtakingly good on HD. It now looks ok on HD and like an old CRT on SD.

This is very much a backward upgrade, a new EPG but at the cost of picture quality I have sent a complaint to SKY, i'm not happy to continue paying them unless they resolve this (it truly is that much poorer) - I wait with baited breath . . . .

I have had the new EPG since last week and there is no difference in PQ on my Samsung -Model no. 1.1.730 - Version 973004 - Op Sys Version 1.32B12

Are the details above the same as your box or do they differ ?

Re: Poor PQ since Samsung EPG update - any answers ?

I posted this letter before but probably on the wrong thread so i am trying again on this one---
I have not noticed a picture quality deterioration on any of the channels on the main lounge tv fed directly by the sky box since the new epg was installed-- but the tv in the bedroom up stairs, scrolling through the channels(fed via rf2 out) i would say 50% of the channels have bad interference lines---- this has only happened since the new epg.
The bbc channels, the itv channels, channel 4 channels, and oddly 301 and 302 (sky film premiere channels) plus many others. The remaining sky films channels (but NOT the horror or for men channels) on these i have a very good picture---
as i do sky 1,2 & 3.---has anyone else experienced this.
I have turned the mini tv off thinking this could of been the culprit but it wasnt.
I am 100% convinced the interference is from the box.
I also think that the channels involved are fed from a different satelllite----recently a lot of us suffered a 'no satellite signal is being received' but it was only on these particular channels.
Also If i operate the epg (from the bedroom) whilst on a channel with interference a recorded programme also is played back with interference, but if i switch to a channel with a good picture and operate the epg then the playback is also a good picture.

I agree the HD channels and SD channels are now softer and not as crisp as before the upgrade very poor from SKY hopefully they will address this soon

I have rang sky on 08442 410006 which is HDTv direct number and they are not aware of this issue so if you have it ring them and tell them

Re: Poor PQ since Samsung EPG update - any answers ?

Last week my Samsung 007 box received the new EPG. Since the upgrade I have noticed two issues.

1. The sound seems much quieter, on the old EPG 25 on the amp was fine, I now need it up to 35 to get the same level of sound out of the speakers. I have looked to see if there is a sound level setting but can’t seem to find it. I am running optical to a STRDG820 amp.

2. I notice a lot of Panasonic owners saying the SD picture has got worse. I have a Sony KDL-40V4000 and am convinced that it is noticeably worse than before. Is anyone else experiencing these issues and if so are there any resolutions \ setting changes to try?

My Samsung box is a 007 one and my telly is a Panasonic G10 fed by HDMI and I believe my PQ has suffered since the EPG update.

Same model Samsung but Pioneer Plasma.
Deteriorated PQ very noticable on my tv.
I suspect it will more noticable the bigger the screens. It looks really awful on my 60"

I've done so.
Discussed on the New EPG thread but wanted to register my concerns here now there is a specific thread for this issue.

Re: Poor PQ since Samsung EPG update - any answers ?

Be interesting if the issue can be pinpointed down to specific Samsung models or if it's just random.

I'd certainly buy a different make/model if I could be sure getting the old PQ back

Where in this new epg can i check what model number my box is? ill report back then if it is just the 7's that would be interesting as that would suggest something different with that mosel number to the others

Re: Poor PQ since Samsung EPG update - any answers ?

Does anyone actually like the new EPG ? I think it looks cheap and PQ is poorer across all channels.
I think it looks cheap and is not as clear as the old one.

I must say im not a fan of it at all, but we have it so have to use it, have you also rang Sky on the number above to complain about the PQ issue most of us on here have and they need to be told about it

What is the model number of your box also?

The model number is in Settings (the spanner) then System Details
My model number is actually 1.1.730
Version Number is 973007

I think it's the last three numbers of the version number that people have been quoting in other threads so that's the one I quoted. I'm not sure if it's the right thing to quote though

Re: Poor PQ since Samsung EPG update - any answers ?

ok mine is a 0007 box looks like it could be and issue with this box model, sky rang me back and sent some ignals down to box not sure if this has helped, they recommended doing a software download which i had already done

engineer would be the next step ut cannot see what he would achieve. and swapping out my new box for a refurb would not help

Re: Poor PQ since Samsung EPG update - any answers ?

Thanks for the replies. I thought I would start a thread specifically asking this question rather than trawl through the main Samsung EPG thread and pick out people who have this issue.

My model details are as follows :

Model No 1.1.730
Version No 974006

It seems to me 1) it has affected several of us 2) it is not make of TV specific and 3) it is not box model specific as mine is a 006 but a few others here have a 007 one.

Re: Poor PQ since Samsung EPG update - any answers ?

Poor PQ as detailed in other samsung thread, the day the new epg updated.

Panasonic PZ81B 50"

Samsung Model no 1.1.730

Version no 973004

I was going to downgrade my Sky sub on the upcoming renewal date but I'm now leaning toward getting a Humax Freesat PVR instead and going for the double whammy of no monthly subs and better PQ.

£459 down the swanny for Sky next year !

The sound is definitely quieter and the absence of any volume control with the new EPG is really anoying. What a ridiculous thing to leave out of the menu.

As for the rest of the menu, I am starting to get used to it and like some of the new features; but can't help thinking that something that was so simple extremely intuitive has been replaced with a clunky irritating mess. My wife hates it and now doesn't use the Sky box at all (Hooray).

As for the soft picture, I don't think it is caused by the new EPG, I thought mine had gone soft some time ago ( oh-er missus). But then you watch programmes like Fringe and the picture is stunning again. So what is going on, is it the content and how it is filmed or is it something more sinister like has been mentioned on other threads about bandwidth drops and codec changes?

forgot to mention mine is a 004

Not the EPG but it is firmware and that can affect other things unintentionally

Give Sky a ring on the number above 08442 410006 and report the pq and the other issues and they will act needs people to report it though they open between 7am and 11pm
