500gb hard disk upgrade problem

Hi, I have searched the forums but cant find any detail. I upgraded the hard disk on my Thomson HD box to a 500gb western digital wd500aaks. I just swapped the disk and didnt copy across any programmes as I understood that the HD box would format the new disk. When I powered my box back up it waited about 1 min and then the drive started spinning. It sounded like it was starting and stopping for about two minutes but was pretty loud and clunky. After that it stopped but the sky box wouldnt power on.
It then started the cycle again for the same time and when it stopped the box still wouldnt power on.
I tried rebooting again and the same thing kept happening. Eventually I gave up and just put the original disk back in which worked fine.

What I want to know is do I have a problem with the disk (which was brand new from Amazon) in which case I can send it back for a swap, or is it something I have done wrong, e.g. not formatting or preparing the disk properly?

Any help would be appreciated.

Ben

sounds like a duff disc to me, also some discs have problem working with sky hd, do a search and choose a disc drive that someone has got to work with sky hd. Also why not go for a bigger disc such as a 1 terabit drive as the 500gig one isnt giving you that much extra space and using copy + and an extranla caddy is very easy to do.

If you have PC connect it in and download tools which can check it for you. See WD's website support section. If they pass then there is something else which is at fault.

Using Copy+ you can just format the drive for use that might be worth a try.

Would agree about the formatting, should be as "basic disk" not dynamic, which it may have come from manufacturer as. See here

Re: 500gb hard disk upgrade problem

WD 500 aaks should work without any problems in a Thomson box.Mine does and imo lots of others also. This has always been one of the 500gb drives of choice.
Check your connections ......loose Sata .....easily done.

Re: 500gb hard disk upgrade problem

yeah thats why I got the WD one so it would be no hassle! I checked and double checked the connections and the old one went straight back in no problem so dont think its that. I will try and see if it is a formatting problem by adding the disk to my PC but havent got an external caddy and dont really want to spend £15 on one to just find out that it is the disk that is broken and then never use the caddy again!
