Live pause problem

Had this happened a few times now and it's getting very annoying.

Paused channel 4 this morning, pre ER, to get on with some jobs and when i was ready to watch it I was -45 mins behind live tv. AFAIK I should always be 45 mins behind 'live' tv unless I fast forward.

However getting towards the end of ER and suddenly the message that I had reached the end and to press Select to go back to live tv or back up to return (which just took me back to a paused screen). It was as though I was watching a recording rather then paused live tv, but I had not pressed the record button. Any ideas as to whats going on?

Re: Live pause problem

The buffer is probably set for 30 mins (or something less than 45 mins). So, it will only store up to 30 mins via the pause button. Once you got to 31 mins in front of live TV, it could no longer continue recording live TV via the pause button - the buffer won't let it - you would need to use the record button to add the programme into the planner for playback later. It would still store the first thirty minutes of programme in the buffer, to play back once you released pause, but after that there was nothing else in the buffer, so you had to return to live TV.

This is all completely normal and how Sky+ works. It is not a fault. If you want more buffer time, increase it within Sky+ setup, or learn to use the record button.

As Broadz said, that's how it works. You may not have pressed the record button, but the machine starts to record the programme from the time you hit 'Pause', until it reaches the maximum buffer time you have set in your Sky+ Setup ( maximum Instant Replay is 60 minutes ). That's how Live Pause works.

If I am watching anything on Live Pause, and wish to return to live TV, I just hit the black button ( with the white square ) to the right of the red record button, to return to the live channel.

This is not correct, or not at least not consistent with the way the functionality works on a Sky+ box (which I tested last weekend in response to a similar query) - I suppose the HD box may be different.

The Instant Rewind setting controls how far into the show you can REWIND, if you are currently watching live - basically as the name implies. It does NOT control how much of the show you can pause.

If you pause a show the box will (or at least should) continue recording until the END of the current show as set by the EPG. This is regardless of the setting in Instant Rewind. This should be obvious from the fact it is possible to set instant rewind to 5 minutes, or even OFF but still pause TV for longer.

What happens when you reach the END of the current show is a different matter. This is the point at which you can get the recording interrupted message.

Unfortunately I am unable to offer a consistent explaination of exactly when recording interrupted does appear. One might assume you only get it when running more than X minutes behind live, where X is the Instant Rewind setting. However when I tested this didn't appear to be the case.

In my tests I had IR set to 5 minutes and paused a film by 45 minutes and was able to watch to the end and then well into the subsequent program without issue.

Re: Live pause problem

Sorry, my mistake. Misread the post. Agree with your comments. Getting back from Live Pause to live TV remains the same.

Re: Live pause problem

As Pcbbc stated above this isn't related to instant rewind (which by the way is set to 60mins) as I've been over an hour behind before and had no problems. Equally so a had the problem happen after only 7 mins before.

Been through all the settings when it happened before and I know how sky+ works (or at least should).

Re: Live pause problem

I have seen a similar issue on both my Sky+HD and normal Sky+.

So pause TV (I think) and go back in the buffer to the start of a programme that is in the 60 mins instant rewind buffer.

Start playback get to the point where you initially paused and you get end of recording message.

So it looks like the buffer wasn't added to after I went rewind?

This has only happened a couple of times and most other times it works fine.
