Samsung box Hard Disk Upgrade - Format Drive?

I have just this moment done a hard drive upgrade on my Samsung HD box.
Original 300GB Seagate drive removed.
WD WD5000AACS (500GB Green, SATA2) drive installed.

The box powers up OK and I've got "working sky".
However if I try and recrod anything I get a message about "Recording and playback currently unavailable" and a phone number to call.

If I remember correctly there is basically a "System Reset" option that will wipe and reformat the hard drive - which is what I want to do, this is a brand new drive with nothing on.
Can somebody tell me how to do this if such a feature exists?

If it doesn't - anything I can try to get the boxes record and playback features working?

Re: Samsung box Hard Disk Upgrade - Format Drive?

press "services" then press 4.0.1 select

this will give you the installers menu

you need number 8 which will do a full system reset and format your new 500GB drive

Re: Samsung box Hard Disk Upgrade - Format Drive?

Thanks for that - I've now got recording/playback working.
However as is the usual case when I try to do things that hundreds of people have done before me....

The box runs for around 5-10 minutes and then just goes into stand-by.
Power it up, it's on channel 998.
Watch television for around 5-10 minutes and then into stand-by again.

This is a brand new HD - so unlikely to be faulty.
Compatibility issue with the Samsung boxes?

Re: Samsung box Hard Disk Upgrade - Format Drive?

Oh dear - it would appear I'm not the first to have such problems.
You wanna know what hurts the most?
When the guy came around to install HD for me I specifically asked him if he had a Samsung on the van.
He had a Pace with my name on it but did indeed manage to find a Samsung and that's what I've got.

Can anyone with a Samsung HD box and has done a hard drive upgrade to 500GB let me know the exact make/model of HD used?
I'm going to have to assume that this WD is fine in Pace and Thompson boxes but not in Samsung.

Re: Samsung box Hard Disk Upgrade - Format Drive?

Stoofa it seems that the Samsung is very particular about which drive is used. As others have found out it looks like it's the power supplies' ability to deal with the harddrive power consumption. I had tried a 500GB Samsung HD502IJ Spinpoint but that failed in exactly the manner you describe. I now have a Seagate 500GB ST3500830SCE on order. This drive is has the same basic spec as the smaller Seagate that came out and I have noticed that at least one person on another formum has had success with this drive and the new Samsung box. Fingers crossed as it should arrive later this week.

Thanks for the information.
When your new drive arrives would you be so kind as to report back your results?
If the Seagate works for you then I'll order myself one straight away

Re: Samsung box Hard Disk Upgrade - Format Drive?

To Stoofa and anybody else with a new Samsung box that is interested.
I received my Seagate ST3500830SCE 500GB drive today. I transferred all HD recordings and Anytime over using Copy+ and its now installed and running silently without a hitch.
The drive has exactly the same power consumption specs as its smaller 300GB brother so I didn't expect any. The only small issue is that there are not that many of these drives about now being last years 'vintage'.
Overall though I'm happy with the result and glad I went for this drive.

Re: Samsung box Hard Disk Upgrade - Format Drive?

Thanks for the update.
I can see what you mean about difficulty finding one - nowhere stocks and not that many places actually list it.

I've placed an order at Insight who say "Ordered on Request" - so fingers crossed they can source me one from wherever they got you one from

Thanks.

Re: Samsung box Hard Disk Upgrade - Format Drive?

Thanks Stoofa, got your message.
Yes I was presently surprised with Insight. I placed my order on Friday and it turned up today even though they were not showing stock when I ordered it!
Let me know how you get on with the drive when it arrives.
