Samsung box keeps turning off after 1 TB upgrade?

I've got a Samsung HD box which I've just fitted a WD10EACS 1TB drive to, and within the first hour the box has turned itself off 4 times. I followed the instructions from Copy+ and all my recordings are there, but this problem is annoying me. Can someone advise me as to what's wrong please?

Pretty please!!!!!

Cheers.

Make that 5 times, AAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH

Re: Box keeps turning off after 1 TB upgrade?

I thought it was just happening when recording 2 channels.
But NOPE. It turns off just when WATCHING a single channel?
Come on, where are the tech-heads?

Looks like 74 people have no idea.
Put the original drive back in and it's fine again.
Has anyone, or do you know of anyone, that has successfully done the 1 TB upgrade on the Samsung box, and if so what drive was used?
Think I'll give the Samsung Spinpoint a try. You'd think they make their own drives work with their box.

Re: Box keeps turning off after 1 TB upgrade?

Faulty new Harddisks are not unheard of ? but it may be a Hardware issue in the Samsung its difficult to say without more Samsung owners reporting to the forum, it would be intersting to see some pics of the Internals externals of the New Samsung HD Box if you look at the thread below you will see pics I posted of the New Pace HD Box we can see what differences if any there are between the two.

Re: Box keeps turning off after 1 TB upgrade?

What I will say now though is that the hard drive is in a totally different place. More like in the centre of the box, mounted on top of the mainboard.

Pics in this thread:
Inside Samsung HD box pics.

Seems to be working now with the Samsung 1TB Spinpoint.
Got a feeling the Samsung box doesn't like the variable speed of the WD.

I've just had the same experience with the WD drive. However, a 400GB Hitachi drive also played up in the same way.

How is your Samsung 1TB Spinpoint running now?

Would you mind letting me know what exact model is it? Thanks!

Maybe this is a major problem with Samsung HDSKY boxes ...

I've upgraded my Samsung SkyHD to a Samsung f1 1TB drive and it's been fine over the last 2 weeks.

Edit: Model... Samsung Spin Point F1 1TB Internal SATA Hard Drive HD103UJ (£74.00 delivered from amazon)

HTH.

Sorry about the slow response. I got my drive from Aria too as I live nearby, but when I got it, it was £90 quid!! I find it's not the quietest drive around, and it does still turn itself off every week or so. But overall it's been great.

Re: Box keeps turning off after 1 TB upgrade?

It does sound as though the Samsung boxes have a less resilient power supply in them. Inside, they look virtually the same as the Thomson boxes; the Pace is a very different design with the hard disk in a separate compartment (positioned where the PSU is on the S/T boxes). I've been running about 3 weeks with a WD drive in my Pace box and it's been faultless (oh god, my big mouth, it'll no doubt fail now!).

If you look at the specs. on the top of the drive fitted by Sky:
300GB Seagate DB35.3: +5v 0.72A, +12v 0.52A

Whereas the replacement drives that didn't work are:
1TB Western Digital WD10EACS: +5v 0.70A, +12v 0.55A
400GB Hitachi HDS724040KLSA80: +5v 0.78A, +12v 0.98A

and the one that does work is:
1TB Samsung HD103UJ: +5v 0.70A, +12v 0.50A

So maybe the issue is the 12v power consumption?

My hunch is that any drive which consumes more than 0.52A current at +12v is likely to fail.

Re: Box keeps turning off after 1 TB upgrade?

The WD10EVCS that lots of people are now using is rated at 340mA (0.34A) in read/write mode so maybe that's why they seem to be so reliable?

Re: Box keeps turning off after 1 TB upgrade?

I can report the same problem with a 500G WD

500G WD SATA2 WD5000AACS

Any 500G drives confirmed working with the samsung boxes?

Cheers.

Well I can report one that doesn't. The 500GB Samsung HD502IJ Spinpoint. I get the same symptoms as others where the HD box goes into standby every 5 to 10 minutes.
I also agree that it looks like the Samsung box PSU is borderline with some harddrives.

Re: Box keeps turning off after 1 TB upgrade?

I had a Samsung Sky+ HD box fitted last Saturday and (probably unwisely) immediately upgraded the HDD to a Samsung Spinpoint 1TB, with the programs from my old Sky+ box on, courtesy of Copy+.

It all works well except that when the box powers up from standby to do a recording, it almost always seems to reset itself, ending up on channel 998 and giving programmes as part recorded due to power-cut. It never shuts itself down when viewing and happily records two programmes while watching one already recorded.

As an electronics engineer, I suspect that the new HDD is taking too much current on start-up, dropping the voltage and resetting the box.

I have temporarily increased the padding at the start to 10 minutes, which avoids losing the start of programmes, but need to sort out whether it is a faulty box, faulty HDD, or just incompatibility.

Reading the rest of this thread, it looks like the Samsung box is a bit fussy, but my problem does not seem to be the same as those reported here.

I will see if I can power the disk from an external supply and see if that helps.

Richard

Re: Box keeps turning off after 1 TB upgrade?

Richard (BENGUNN)

I too have a Samsung Sky+HD and a Samsung 103UJ 1TB disk.
I have spent the last couple of days trying to get the disk to work, but to no avail I'm afraid and have now given up and reverted to using the supplied Seagate drive.

I tried setting the Samsung from 'Fast'' to 'Quiet', speed from 300 Sata 2 to 150 Sata 1. Each time I got the same results as you with the first few minutes of each recorded program missing and the reason given being a "Power Cut" and channel 998 displayed at subsequent switch on. I even watched and found that the recording would start at the correct time, but after between 3 to 5 minutes there was a whirring sound as the disk powered down (or reset) and the record light went out. After a minute the record light would come back on and the recording would continue until the end. Each time, what had been recorded was completely OK. If the box was already powered up when the recording started there was no problem.
Suspecting, as you have, that the startup current was too much for the power supply I connected the Samsung disk to a sepatate power supply (a spare connector on a portable Shuttle PC I have) and tested for 6 hours last night. Some programs were OK but unfortunately others had the same problem and as I couldn't think of anything else I have now given up!
I would be more than interested if you can find a solution.

Trevor

Re: Box keeps turning off after 1 TB upgrade?

Just joining this thread as another Samsung box owner who currently cannot get a working upgrade.
Instaled the WD 5000AACS and the box just reboots itself every 5 minutes or so - so I too am back to the supplied 300GB Seagate unit.

Somebody has ordered in a 500GB drive from the exact same product line as the original disk - hopefully that will report back as working and then I too will get one.

Suggest you contact Sky and ask them to swap the box. Tell them the symptoms you are suffering with the 1TB disk 'as if' it were the Seagate doing it because for some people this is actually happening with the supplied Seagate.

There are other Samsungs out there that are working fine (like mine).

You could even try to get a Pace model.

Re: Box keeps turning off after 1 TB upgrade?

I am a bit reluctant to risk changing the Samsung as it works fine apart from the reset problem, the picture is superb even in SD, the fast forward and rewind work perfectly and I have had no lipsync problems.

It has never rebooted once it is up and running.

SCART - I too changed the Samsung 1TB HDD to 'quiet' mode before I installed it but I doubt that that made any difference. Have you tried it not in 'quiet' mode?

I will try a few things and let you know how I get on but it may be a few days before I get time.

Re: Box keeps turning off after 1 TB upgrade?

Bengunn

Yes I've tried 'quiet' and 'fast' at both 300 and 150.

As you say, in all other respects the Samsung is working perfectly and by all accounts there are no "new" boxes being installed as replacements until possibly next year. It's not all bad news for me as I also have a Thompson that was installed at 08:00 on the first day Sky HD was available. I upgraded that with a 1TB WD drive (can't remember the id) some month ago with no problems and changed the capacitors on the power supply at the same time.
It looks like I will have to keep the films on the Thompson and the shorter programms on the Samsung.

I'm interested on changing the HDD on my new pace, but I assume all those that are changing HDD on new boxes are voiding the warranties or does this procedure not effect that?

All this would make me worry that the power supply is borderline full stop. Given the small differences in current at play, one wonders what the Samsung will do with the stock hard disk when the PSU tolerances change as it ages.

Yes, it voids the warranty as you have to remove a sticker on the outside of the case, unless you're careful and don't damage the sticker of course.

Technically you are voiding the warranty, however, there were no warranty stickers on my Samsung HD box and it did not even have security screws (my old Sky+ box did), just pozidrive screws. It is reasonably easy to change the HDD in my Samsung box without any sign that you have done it, it is just a shame that it does not work properly (although I have a plan that may fix it).

Just upgraded my new Samsung box with an HD103UJ (not the Y) and after about 5 mins of watching a recording it stutters, I hear the hard drive re-initialise and then it plays for another few minutes. No use whatsoever!!

Put back in the original 300Gb disk and all is fine.
