Confused

Hi Guys,

Ok I am confused, When sky show a film or tv series on their HD channels is it true Hd (720 p upwards) or just upscaled stuff?

The reason I ask is that I am sure I have seen films advertised on sky movies HD that are not released on HD-DVD nor Blu-Ray so i can only assume they are just upscaled broadcasts, am I correct?

Dave

Re: Confused

Just because a movie hasn't yet been released on HD-DVD or Blu-Ray, doesn't mean that it doesn't exist in HD.

Re: Confused

They are definitely in HD. You know by the clarity and vibrancy of colour, however Meet The Fockers did look a bit grainy....

SKY1HD, SKYArtsHD and SKY Sports HD show a mixture of upscaled SD and native HD and if you can't tell by looking then this is indicated in the EPG and the type of DOG used.
SKY Movies HD is a native HD channel (as is Disco, NG and History) as there is a huge back catalogue of native HD movies since anything shot on 16mm film upwards can be scanned into a computer to generate a 1080p master. Spend a bit more money and they can be cleaned up resulting in a much nicer transfer and spend a lot you can restore a movie and it tends to look as good if not better than when it was made

Movies were being broadcast in HD years before HD-DVD and Blu-ray even hit the drawing boards

Re: Confused

Agree. Someone posted up somewhere on here what resolution 35mm film could be scanned upto without the film's structure being the limiting factor. It was way higher than HD so there's plenty of scope yet for old masters Only question is if some of the early films will last that long before they deteriorate to much
