Sky HD with no phone line?

My father has just moved home, he currently has a standard sky package and has been a subscriber for many years. I have setup his old tv and box with the sky dish that was already in place at his new home.

However, he does not wish to have a new landline phone installed there as he had in his previous home, i know that should'nt affect his standard sky sub as afaik sky don't bother hasseling you by letter/phone about not having your box plugged into the phone after 12 months of subscribing.

But, he now wishes to have Sky HD, i am getting him a new 42px60 panny and i think the HD sub would really do that telly justice but im concerned with the fact that this may be considered a *new* installation/contract as such and thus the installer would only agree to install with the presence of an active landline.

Does a current subscriber to a standard sky package have to sign a *new* contract and thus has to agree to plug the box in the socket of an active line for the next 12 months on signing upto to HD? Or is it not a problem as it could be considered a *continuing* subscription and a local installer should have no issues with going ahead without the landline in place?

Thanks

If you buy the box direct from Sky (or their affilitates), yes, you must connect it to a phone line.

If on the other hand you buy a box from eBay for example, you are under no obligation to keep it connected to a phone line for the first 12 months.

If i purchased a box from ebay would there have to be changes made to the dish, such as a dual lnb? Would this come with the box?

If you don't have Sky+, then you would have to add the dual LNB plus the extra down feed from it to your receiver, to take advantage of the dual recording feature. The dual LNB doesn't come in the box, and would have to purchased separately.

Re: Sky HD with no phone line?

I currently have Sky + and am looking to upgrade to Sky HD. I will most likely be buying the box as standalone from an independent retailer and swapping it over. I understand you can then call sky and get your existing card paired up.

....... however ....

I currently don't have a landline phone therefore the Sky+ isnt connected. I am on VoIP. I have had SKY+ for 2 years nearly now.

My question is ... does the SKY HD box HAVE to be connected to a BT landline in order for the guys at SKY to pair my card or do what they need to do?

No, a "dual LNB" is useless as it points at two satellites (Google "monobloc"). What you need is a "quad-output" LNB with suitable fitting for your dish.

Re: Sky HD with no phone line?

I can see there being a probelm when they do the call back to activate the HD subscription. You would prob be fine if you just wanted BBC HD but if you actually wanted the Sky HD Package you will prob have to connect it to a phone line just whilst you activate it...maybe you could get away with connecting to a neighbours phone for the activation?!

If you are upgrading to HD, then you are, in effect, taking out a 12mth contract for HD. As part of the T&C's, you need to have a phone line connected to the box. When you ring up to upgrade, they'll tell you all this on the phone.

Re: Sky HD with no phone line?

I have been told though that if you refer them to the T&C's of Vonage (Voip company) it tells them that the service is not compatible with Sky, and they take this stipulation out of your contract?

Do they HAVE to pair up using the phone line?,

Re: Sky HD with no phone line?

You're sure they don't check the phone number when pairing?

Re: Sky HD with no phone line?

So, my next question would be ...

What are my options due to the fact I am on Voip and do not have a landline.
