SKY HD 160Gb IS NOT ENOUGH

Anybody else noticed how quickly your 160Gb is used up?
I have one page of recorded stuff some SD & some HD & I,m down to 50% already. I was used to a 120Gb Sky + & 2 pages of films etc still gave me 50%! I wonder if Sky will release some of 'their' 140Gb that their currently using in my box?

You've got more chance of an external official SATA drive.
I'm still waiting for a quiet 750GB to replace the internal 300GB one

You could always try watching some. In the years I've had Sky+ I don't thing I've ever had more than half a dozen recorded programmes at a time.

The trouble now is that people are so impressed by some HD stuff that they want to keep it, and there's no way of archiving HD material. I had to bite the bullet and delete Planet Earth and Bleak House quite quickly. The disk is definitely not big enough.

And, no, Sky won't release any of the 140gb they reserve. Despite saying that they have no current plans to use it, they couldn't claw it back if they ever do need it. We could all call them and say we had no interest in "push" programming, but I doubt it would do any good.

True, but Sky+, whether its on the HD box or not was never intended as a permanent video archiving device but more of a time-shift system for recording and playback. I suppose you'll just have to wait until HD-DVD and/or Bluray is finally here, probably sooner than Sky deciding to increase the HDD capability.

This is one of the top three reasons why I have decided to switch back to Sky SD for the timebeing (I just made the call this afternoon to Sky for a 'de-install') - I have a SD Sky+ box with a 250Gb HDD inside, and it's great.

The current HD box I have doesn't have anywhere near enough storage space - coupled with failed recordings and a lack of content post World Cup, I think I'll get Sky HD again after Christmas.

Hopefully, by then, the capacity will have increased.

The disk on the HD box is far too small to use it "properly" as a PVR - ie, recording a whole bunch of shows you might like so that you can create your own schedule of an evening for a reasonable base of choice.

Sky+HD is fine for some basic timeshifting, but you couldn't base your viewing around it.

I have around a terabyte on various systems, and that's seems to me to be about right to provide sufficient choice at all times for 5 people.

I have quite a few saved shows, and have never been as low as 50%

I use the storage system the way it's intended. It's not a permanent archive device, and if it was designed as such, a lot of people would be concerned that people were "keeping" their films/programmes as opposed to just watching them.

Bear in mind that Sky HD is advertised as a 160GB hard drive, and the packaging also includes that information. I see no reason for Sky to increase that amount (much as we'd like them to), as they have never marketed the box as anything other than 160GB capacity.

Personally, it's fine for me. My disk is currently >90% empty and I just delete programmes after watching them. I used Sky+ in the same way previously, just as a timeshifter. I don't think they were ever intended as archiving machines (as this would be copyright violation), though I do appreciate there is not other way to archive HD material currently, which is exactly what the HD providers want...

I use my HD box for "keeping" HD stuff and my old Sky+ box for SD.

I'm still gonna run out of space and have to get ruthless

There's a midle gound here. I only timeshift, but I often timeshift by weeks or even months, not just hours or to the next day. I haven't even started season 2 of Desperate Housewives yet!

Oh for god's dake - it's SKY!!!

How long 'til any of this stuff is repeated anyway? - why the hell would you want to record it - especially the HD stuff - it's on a seemingly constant loop !
