Sky+ HD Ouputs

Hi
Just had sky+ HD installed, engineer set output to 1080i but in the user manual it says that the default is and should be auto. is there any benefit in having 1080i as my output default as i cant see too much difference in picture quality?
Cheers

With some models of TV there is a black screen problem when the box is set to auto , in other words , when switching from an SD station to a HD station the screen will black out and sometimes wont come back.

This can make station flicking annoyingly slow , so leaving it on 1080i is a good idea to avoid that issue.

If your TV does not have that problem then Auto is fine. The Engineer probably left it on 1080i as that mode has the least problems.

Plus points for using 1080i rather than auto - your TV screen doesn't need to change from 1080i to 576p when switching from a high definition channel to a standard definition channel.

Negative points - your TV is fooled into thinking everything being output is in high definition, and therefore will autostretch everything to 16:9, even if you are watching a 4:3 standard definition programme. Your TV may do this anyway, if it is a Samsung, a Philips, or a Panasonic, in which case you might as well output everything as 1080i anyway.

Panasonics handle autoswitching just fine (I'd consider it a fault under warranty if it didn't, to be honest).
