Question Phillips HD Ready TV, SKY HD HDMI issue..

Morning all,

I've a Phillips HD Ready Match Line TV i bought at the dawn of the new HD era. It only has DVI in though

Now, I can run my xbox through it in HD through the component cables and the picture is I guess 1080p? Thats fine...

However I have had to upgrade to Sky HD as a box in a multiroom'd room has packed up. So its Sky+ upstairs box for downstairs and the HD box I am told has a scart out anyway, along with the HDMI. However I do actually want HD, but don't have the money at the moment to buy the new Bravia I want.

Is it possible using the DVI connector to get HD? I have done some research (mostly confusing advice) suggesting I can get a HDMI to DVI connector but I'll have no sound?

Any advice at this point would be fantastic!

Thank you

John

Use a HDMI to DVI converter for the picture. Use stereo RCA cables to carry audio from Sky HD box to TV.

As long as the DVI input supports HDCP

How can I tell if my model supports that?

Connect it with the adapter and if you get warning messages on the screen about the display not supporting HDCP then you know it does not. If it just works then you will be fine.

Otherwise you need to check the TV manual to see if it states HDCP compliance or contact Philips for confirmation.

Ok.I am compliant with HDCP. Woohoo.

Now here is the problem, I have a DVI audio out which is a headphone jack. The DVI connector that will be converted using the DVI to HMI lead does not carry audio.

I have audio in red and White on the side along with SVideo but that's not the HD source. Can I run a separate audio lead from the Sky HD using the headphone jack DVI out?

Your TV will provide RCA stereo audio in connectors (red and white). These will work in conjunction with the DVI high definition video in.

Your Sky HD box provides RCA stereo audio out (red and white). Use a standard RCA stereo cable to connect the Sky audio outputs to the TV audio inputs. If necessary, configure the TV to accept its audio input from the RCA connection when it receives it video input from the DVI connection.

No TV manufacturer will create a TV which accepts DVI input without an equivalent audio input - as DVI cannot carry audio. So, find out which audio input corresponds with DVI video input - and connect the RCA stereo cable to that.
