Hd & dd 5.1 audio question.

G'day Northern hemisphere cousins We've got a channel on paytv downunder - UKTV which carries quite up to date British programs (surprise surprise). None of the shows on UKTV carry 5.1 only DD 2.0. I wonder if programs like: Dr Who, Corrie or Hotel Babylon are actually made with 5.1? If so I will be asking our local satellite carrier as to why they sell us HD but then miss out what is surely one of the virtues of the technology. Also we can't access 5.1 via HDMI from the satellite decoder, is this normal from a satellite box?

Firstly, only HD programmes are made with DD5.1.

There area few, but not many DD5.1 programmes on BBC HD, none on ITV HD.

Only two Doctor Who episodes have been in HD, they weren't (I'm pretty sure) in DD5.1.

Sky HD boxes don't output DD through HDMI.

Doctor Who does have a 5.1 audio track although for the last special the BBC messed it up when it was broadcast.

There are a handful of Pace satellite receivers that will do DD over HDMI such as the TDS830NP used by Sky Deutschland but not the UK TDS850 model.

Yes its UKTV HD Channel down here in Oz, I understand its a compilation of programmes from Granada and BBC1. Our particular service provider have only been offering HD channels for a week, thats the reason I'm asking whether I could expect to see the occasional show with 5.1 audio. All I've seen (heard) thus far is 2.0. A quick check on the recordings on my pvr reveals the following BBC HD series currently in 5.1 include

Defying Gravity - Sc Fi
Emma - Classical drama
Garrows Law - Courtroom Drama
Natural Word
The Sarah Jane Adventures - DR Who spin off
Top Gear
The Tudors
Strictly Come Dancing

So watch out for these
