SKY are in the business of PAY telly, giving away a primary function of their proprietary licensed hardware means (before Freesat) it was ridiculous not to exploit the market conditions to the full. Thankfully since 2001 when the SKY+ was launched and everyone had to pay an extra tenner the service has become "free" with any subscription not just the premium channels (circa 2003), there really is no benefit to SKY making it free for non-paying households as Freeview PVR's have no dinted SKY's business one bit and neither has Freesat PVR's. Mind you launching at £300 and now £250 doesn't make them that competitive
Now long term SKY are still looking at a server/client system, that I expect would make PVR type functions inclusive of a server subscription and ideal for multi box households. It has to be cheaper since they won't be selling many if every client box has to have a tenner multi-room sub
