If this is a multiroom subscription then all subscription boxes must be permanently connected to the same working landline. This is a security measure by Sky to limit fraudlent use of one multiroom account's cards being used at multiple addresses and is very well policed by the boxes "phoning home" (to a freephone number) at random intervals of around four weeks after an over the air signal to the card. You will get warning letters asking you to connect and if you ignore them then you are automatically charged your full subscription on each and every viewing card.

Re: Getting 2nd Sky HD box does it have to be connected to the phone line?

if I just buy a SKY HD box from where ever say ebay could I just take the card from my standard box I use in my bedroomroom and put it in my HD box. But I am guessing I would still need it to be connected to a phone line to make it give me the HD pakagage?

Re: Getting 2nd Sky HD box does it have to be connected to the phone line?

The Sky Viewing Card has to be 'paired' to the box to work. You can swop cards between boxes but every time you do you will have to phone Sky and ask them to pair the card to the box you intend using. So the practical answer is 'no' you can't swop cards between boxes on an ad-hoc basis.

The telephone line is a different matter. If you are within the first 12 months of a new subsidised box then it has to remain connected to the phone line. After that it depends upon you, I leave mine connected but many don't on a point of priciple. As the previous answer tells you the exception is Multi-room where the phone line is used to stop abuse of the second card no matter how long the subsciption has been used.

like many of Sky's systems it is a bit hit and miss.

I have multiroom, but have never had either box connected to a phone line, and Sky have never complained....

and plenty of folks have been charged full whack on their multi-room sub when they have been caught and not done anything about it...lol

is it really that hard to get a telephone line to the boxes? seriously, few clips, maybe a small hole in the wall here or there......
