Buying Your Own Router

Would it be possible for me to buy my own router, and be able to access the internet even though it won't be skys default router.
Will they Find out?
Would they charge me for not using their stander router?
Thanks

With some other ISP's you can just swap routers and it works if the settings are correct but with SKY you have to log in everytime you connect to the internet which the router does for you. So you need your login details and sky don't exactly make them available to you but I know you can get them, google should be helpful

To answer your questions , no and no.

While using your own router is possible (and has been done successfully for both ADSL and fibre), the fibre setup is more difficult. It does depend if the firmware of the router is suitable for the manner in which sky authenticate your details and assigns ip addresses to your connection.

Using your own router is outside of the TOU, so don't expect any assistance from sky to sort out any issues with the non oem router.

I have gone for a Billion 7800N, which apparently works fine with sky ...

Did you have to configure your Billion 7800N with sky's unique username and password with your router.
Instead of messing around with all the details would it be better to piggyback on skys router with my new one.

Installing/using your own router with Sky is not difficult if you have extracted the Sky User Name/Password from your Sky router.

Assuming that you have a regular domestic router with built-in ADSL2+ modem, most (all?) of them have and Install Wizard. So run the Wizard, let it detect the Network Settings, and enter they Sky User Name & Password that you extracted from your Sky router when prompted.

It is against Sky's Ts & Cs to do this but large numbers of people do it without sanction. Ensure that you keep your Sky router in case you get problems in the future because Sky will not support routers other than theirs.
