Does distance to exchange really matter?

Hi guys,

I've been with Sky BB for some time and my d/l speed has never increased above 0.3Mb! I have called them on numerous occasions asking what the story is and they simply say that this is all my line can handle due to the distance from the exchange (2.2miles)!

I have also called BT and said that I was thinking of moving back to BT. A guy also confirmed my line could only handle up to 0.5Mb. I said others are getting faster speeds and he said each line to each house is independent so someone in my park might get 10Mb even if I am getting 0.5Mb!!

I have been checking SamKnows - Broadband Availability - Belfast Ormeau (NIORM) Exchange which says that my exchange has FTTC which I believe to be fibre to cabinet so if I am only 300m from that why can I not get higher speeds? I seem to have a lot of wireless connections available in my park so I'm going to walk around and see what the neighbours speed is like with sky or BT.

I have been looking for the wee box where the phone line comes into the house to check the master socket but it must be under the floorboards cause it's no where to be found!

Any advice or help woudl be appreciated.

You may have fibre to cabinet but unless you ask for BT Infinity service you will not benefit from it. BT Infinity – How to get fibre optic broadband
On BT broadband I live 300 meters from my cab and get 2.5M max, my friend lives 30 meters from the same cab but gets 4.5M max. Now the cable in the street from the cab to my house is very poor aluminium cable dug in (not in duct so hard to replace), the friends house is fed by copper cable. So as you can see many other factors cause the issue of speed.

Thanks for this, although it seems totally unfair that one house may have one thing and another house has something different, especially when they're so close together...bl00dy cable layers when they were building the houses I suppose!!

Anyway, looks like i'll just have to wait for infinity and pay OTT for the pleasure of fast download times!!

Thanks for the advice although virgin hasn't reached me yet!!

Anyway, I was searching around another forum for skyusers (lol) and I was basically told to call them, so I did. For some strange reason, they weren't able to sort out the noise on my line but they seemd to hit a switch and my download speed is now up to 0.88Mb.

As I suspected, I was asked to connect to the master socket which is under my floorboards somewhere (previous people must have hid it) but as I don't have this, I have been told to purchase a new filter and he will call me back tomorrow night so I will update further then. I presume if there is no improvement to noise, speed etc then he will get BT to come out and look at the master socket as God only knows what length the extension is under my floorboards!!

The guy was a great help but it sort of made me suspicious as to how they could just up my speed?!!

have you removed ring bell wire that might improve it slightly

the thing is they cant speed it up they would of touched your noise db to slightly speed you a tiny bit up anymore you will start having drop outs

because you have high line db you wont see much improvement at all

The agent probably just changed your line configuration to the best your line can have, but without connecting to that master socket, then you could be cutting yourself short on speed. And I doubt the ISP will arrange a BT engineer to come out because under BT's terms and conditions it's the property owners obligation to ensure the master socket is alway's accessible. it's not there fault if some idiot bury's it under floor boards, it would not have been installed by BT in that way.
