Sky Router Wireless Disconnections

Sky Router Wireless Disconnections

Both my wife and I have laptops that we use in the same room as the Sky black Netgear router. Periodically, both laptops lose the wireless connection (at the same time) to the router. We also have a desktop PC upstairs and this also loses its connection when the laptops lose theirs.

Whilst in the house, my iPhone wirelessly connects to the router and that drops out too. The green wireless light on the router remains green all the time suggesting it's working OK.

This also happens even when only one computer is connected wirelessly which suggests we aren't overloading the wireless capability (if thats possible).

Has anyone else had similar issues and got to the source of the problem

I had similar problems but once I set static IP's on all my devices the issue seemed to subside therefore putting the issue down to DHCP.

Hi Rafe

Many thanks for the reply. Just out of curiosity, would creating a static IP address just alleviate any issues associated with connecting to the internet rather than wireless dropouts?

Just for clarity, do you just get a drop of the internet connection while surfing the net or do you drop network connectivity as well i.e. you get the 'Wireless Not Connected' message?

I don't believe so, if I check the router when the wireless dies, the internet light is still green. I guess the only sure way of checking is to connect one laptop with an ethernet connection and leave the other wireless.

Try reading the many threads here on how to use inSSIDer to fix your problem.

BTW whether you have Static or Dynamic IP Addresses is neither here nor there (Unless you have set some static IP Addresses that were within the DHCP pool.) so don't waste time on it. DHCP is best for 99% of situations - especially if you do not understand my comment in brackets. :-)

If it's just the wireless dropping, and your internet connection and wired lan is fine, then I've had the same problem. My own PC and games machines are via homeplugs, so they have been fine, but my work laptop, my phone and my parents laptop kept disconnecting.

The wireless utility that my work laptop uses doesn't just show the SSID's and signal strength like windows, but also shows the channel and mode (B, G, N). So I did a scan and it picked up about 5 routers on channel 1, 1 on 6 and 1 on 11, so I changed mine to channel 13 (the highest my Sky router goes) and it's not dropped at all since.

So I'd pretty much echo beerhunter, use inSSIDer to find out an appropriate channel to change to.
