Changing Routers

I am currently with sky for my broadband, and got a lovely sagem router from them, only problem is it keeps disconnecting every 10 mins, i have spoke to sky and a BT engineer came out today to test my line which is 100% perfect he said, sky are sending out another router but that could take 2 - 5 days, i have a old router that i want to use till i get my new one, the old one is D-Link DSL-2740R. I have my username and password from my sky router, not the admin/sky one but the one that enables the router to connect via sky's broadband, does anyone know or can help with how i configure my old router to work on Sky's Broadband?????

First you need to find out what is disconnecting: the Broadband or your WiFi connection?

Next it is unlikely to be your router at fault. They do go wrong but rarely.

If it turns tout to be the WiFi that is dropping, read the many threads on these forums on how to fix it.

You also need to eliminate your Internal Wiring as a source of the problem. Lots of threads here on how to.

Finally to use the D-Link router. Connect a PC to it with a cable. In a command prompt window, key ipconfig /all Make a note of the IP address of the Default Gateway. Key that address into a browser. Enter User Name: admin and Password: admin when prompted. Go to advanced settings and run the setup wizard, enter the Sky User Name and Password when prompted.

I'm not familiar with your router, but Sky use the same ADSL settings as BT based ISPs.

Annex A
wan protocol= PPPoA (PPP over Atm)
multiplexing= VC-based (VC-mux)
VPI=0
VCI=38

DSL mode= Multi-Mode (mmode/automatic).

is the standard router Sky supply any good? or is it best to pick up your own ADSL router for use with Sky broadband. Reason I ask I am hopefully moving into first home in new year and will be hopefully taking advantage of sky new customer deals...

AFAIK, you have to use the router that Sky supply or you are in breach of the contract by using another router.

People do use their own kit but there are some horror stories over on SkyUser.co.uk where people have got the U/N and P/W off the Sky supplied router and then used their own only to find that Sky have cut them off because they did that.

Yes, the Sky Supplied routers are perfectly OK. You will need to spend good money to better them and it is against Sky's Ts&Cs for you to use a non-Sky router anyway.
