Hi there people,

i'm new to this game and i'm quite a novice when it comes to understanding even some of thr terms. so please bare with me :lease:

i'm looking for a plasma (pref 42") setup with a total budget of 2k.
will this be enough to get a system or will i have to up my budget.
i know 2k wont get me the best there is but something of decent proven quality would be great.

i only have a 32" phillips with dvd and video at the moment plus a sky box.

any help or info will be greatly appreciated. even a few shops to try and get a feel for the prices.
been in richer sounds and they have a few good deals on but was wondering if it is advisable to stay away from graded sets.

thanks

Chris

42" for £2000 will get you a good panel, but you may need to get extra speakers & stand (if not wall mounting).

Good bets are Panasonic 6 or 7 series (favourites on these boards). NEC apparently do a good set. Pioneer are good but expensive, and not good with Sky signals.

On the other camp are Hitachi owners and you can get a 42pd5200 for just over £2k and it 'may' be more future proof in that it has a higher resolution, but do a search on potential problems.

panny PW6 for £1686 [EDIT:NOW out of stock but PWD7 similar price....] has to be the best deal out there, see www.av-sales.co.uk will need input board for sky and possibly DVD what connections does DVD have?
EDIT NOTE PW7 Charcoal and Silver now £1514.07 at AV-sales inc mount http://www.av-sales.co.uk/plasma/html/panasonic_th-42pwd7bk.html

EDIT £1369.40 inc VAT & delivery (mainland UK) Includes desk stand or wall mount plus component/composite dual slot board or scart board for £50.00.http://www.av-sales.co.uk/plasma/html/panasonic_th-42pwd7bs.html

EDIT well under £1300  http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=169453

EDIT:    Now well under £1200 including Component input and wall mount! http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1818107#post1818107

Chris, I don't mind 'bearing' with you, but I'm sure we'd all have reservations about 'baring' with you... ;-)

I'm a newbie too - have been reading the 'experts' on this forum for a few weeks now and think I'm going to go with a Panny PW6. Just waiting to see what everyone makes of the new PW7 before I take the plunge though.

thanks for the help people. very fast responses.

i would be hoping to wall mount the screen and i think the dvd plugs in via the scart???

the av stuff i haveat the mo is pretty basic.

they seem to have some decent http://www.richersounds.com/index.php?f=itemlist.php&c=1801
units in richer sounds but i dont haveenough knowledge to be able to see what's good or not.

Il go with hornydragon on this. ;)

Just got my Panny PWD6.Best think I ever done.
This screen is fantastic.
For £2000 I would DEFINETELY recomend the PWD6.

Good luck and don't forget your box of aspirins mate,...you will need them trying to learn everything about plasmas. :lesson:

The Panasonic PW6 is gorgeous.

beginning to look like the pw6 is the way foward.
obviously a fan's favourite.

What would i need to buy after the actual screen to get up and running coz i see a lot of people buying tuners and boards etc...

i suggest 1 scart board one JS RGB>VGA converter assuming you dont want to hook up your PC and some speaker, either the over priced panny ones or go surround sound with HD's top tip for plasma owner/buyers on tight budget and fussy missus:
http://www.pioneer.co.uk/uk/product_detail.jsp?product_id=8389&taxonomy_id=62-98
AV amp reciver that has 3 scarts in and one out so just need one scart board in panny..... And add Canton CD1 Speakers: http://www.canton.de/www/index.php4?pg_id=14,30,moviecd1,2,en speaker are £240 from Exclusive forum powerbuy!!!!!
Cantons are well worth the extra.............
Canton Pio combo offers great upgrade path with these babies availble to replace the front small sats http://www.canton.de/www/index.php4?pg_id=14,30,cd100,2,en when cash is less strapped. or for wall mount these: http://www.canton.de/www/index.php4?pg_id=14,30,cd360f,2,en

Incedibly good value and hellishly sexy http://www.hifibitz.co.uk/product.asp?id=3289&aid=53502&oid=3882 or if you are really cash strapped after buying screen be quick and pick up http://www.pioneer.co.uk/uk/product_detail.jsp?product_id=8428&taxonomy_id=62-98 £150 but loose scart switching which is well worth the £60 extra as scart board for panny is £150 ish!!!!!! so for price of panny speakers and second scart board you can have DD/DTS 5.1 and PL2 surround sound with an extra scart....... Bargain with 402 receiver and cantons from germany you are looking at a total price of:
Amp £209 www.hifibitz.co.uk
Speakers £199 www.richersounds.com (Cantons £240 ish depending but worth it)
Plasma £1686 www.avsales.co.uk Plasma and scart board wall bracket £1945 reconmed you buy warranty extension £179 as well. Thats is my top system for £2.5k guys see what you think.... Bargain alright with excellent upgrade path..... and dont forget www.tvcables.co.uk for all your audio and video cables

cheers horny dragon

given me a lot to think about mate.

ma head's spinning!!! trying to figure it all out

i dunno if it is better to wait and see how the pw7 looks????

total's for the 42" pw6d (black) are
screen = £1686
scart board = £134
wall mount = £125
2yrs ext warranty = £199

Total = £2144

or the new 42 pw7B

screen = £2047
board = included in the price i think. unsure if i'll need one to view sky.
wall mount = £125
2yrs ext warranty = £199

Total = £2371

All from Av Sales

What do you people think?? is it worth the extra 200 quid for the latest model.
actually prefer silver myself tbh.
will be running a dvd, sky and xbox off it. poss a video(may ditch it) :suicide:

this stuff's frying ma brain!

Digital-Point.co.uk are doing the PW7 with component board and wall mount for £2099 whic is £50 less than I paid for mine. They will probably swap the component for scart but I don't think they are very cheap for the extended warranties and the customer service is excellent at AV-Sales. Also if you are a forum member I think they do the extended warranties for £170 although you would want to check with AV-Sales.

really unsure now whether to go for the pw6 from av sales or wait and see how the pw7 pans out.

the same deal is on in richer sounds but i see from posts on the board that they aren't well liked. why is this??

really want some decent warranty on the plasma as piece of mind.
anyone have any experience of av sales and richer sounds warranty's??

av-sales is TADL which is pretty good, RS are monkeys that know jack and waste alot of peoples time AV-sales are good offer higher levels of service have good demo facilities and most importantly have stock!!!!! Go PW7 and enjoy!

Thanks again hornydragon, you've been most helpful to me mate.

emailed av sales but no reply as it's the weekend.

would love to be able to pop in but i'm stuck up here in not so sunny scotland.

i'll see what the av team has to say after their email.

Cheers again

I hate to go slightly off-topic - but I'm also brand new to this and thinking of changing my 3 year old Sony CRT 28DX30. With only 12'x12' room it has to be 37" set and thus PW7 looks appealing with small 'footprint' appealing.
Thing is -are these sets nowadays as good a picture for Sky and DVD as my 'old' set? I remember being horified at 100Hz artifacts, esp on Football, on some sets when last choosing a set and hence the deliberate 50hz choice of the Sony.

£2.5K ok but has to be compact, cabinet mounted, has/can fit two RGB scarts and most importantly at least as good a picture as my current Sony.

Any input much appreciated.

Thats interesting about PQ. Its the 'shimmer' on sports that put me off 100Hz previously and to think its not completely fixed 3 years later is disappointing.

I fancy a 36/37" screen with as small as possible overall proportions, I dont care about depth as it will be placed in a wife friendly corner anyway.

Do the latest 36" Panny/Tosh CRTs achieve as good a picture as 50Hz CRTs or is it always a case of sacrificing picture quality for size. (and should I be asking in a different forum). But tbh I'd still prefer a gorgeous thin screen if the PQ could keep up. You think that Sharp to better than PW7? I was assuming from my quick read through these pages that 37" PW6/7 is as good as it gets for thin screens under £5K.

Again sorry to drag OT - but its a lot of money and I do want a stunner if I am to justfity it to myself and my missy.

PS. whereabouts in the margin now I think - no stalking :)

with the pwd6?? would i have to buy a scart board AND the js labs rgb converter. just getting together the costs for the whole thing.

hornydragon - ben has been in touch from av sales and is going to work out a quote for me.

you wont be needing the scart board if you're getting a JS converter....if you're connecting more than one RGB-SCART device, then add a quintro device on top of that

oh btw, as they all say, the scart board on the panny is crap, you're better off with the JS converter

Righ people, think i've sussed it out.????

gonna defo go for the pwd6 and slimline wall mount and also js rgb to vga converter.

but unsure to go with the pioneer vsxc402 av amp...........or the quintro scart box???

will one give a better picture quality over the other??

also been looking at sony strdb795 which is £220

would it be better to go for quintro and sony or the pioneer with 4 scarts.

also are the tech+link cables any good?? the philex thor scarts are only £30 each whereas tech+link are around £40. plus vga is around £15 on www.tvcables.co.uk and almost £70 at av sales. which is the best vga to get?

Decisions Decisions!

Not tempted by the PW7, Chris? What has made you decide to go with the PW6 over the PW7? I know its a bit cheaper, but is that it?
