Jon,

The home cinema is doing great (check out the links on my sig !). Just about everything has been upgraded in some way even more since the build. I am now running a modified Sony G90 9" CRT.

cheers

Re: Scottish HiFi/Av show Dalmahoy 2007

I was hoping that this year we will see a bit more AV as it was all a bit too high brow Hifi for my tastes.

Actually sorry I'll rephrase that - some of the hifi kit on display was awesome but way of out of my reach. However I was also hoping to see some great AV gear and there was very little on show.

This is billed as an AV show as well but I cant see an awful lot of it so far in the line up.

Re: Scottish HiFi/Av show Dalmahoy 2007

I thought that this event was alternating between Dalmahoy and Glasgow's Radisson, and also was an Av-Event in Glasgow rather than a 2 channel event at Marriott?

Won't be going.

Re: Scottish HiFi/Av show Dalmahoy 2007

Just as well the parking is free as I can't see anything worth paying to see or hear that I couldn't see or hear free from good dealers. Certainly compared to the good old fashioned Hi Fi Show at the Russell Hotel in London it appears very poor value for the full admission price of £10. ( only 21 Exhibitors to date and half of them don't appear to know what they will actually be exhibiting )
I don't think I will bother travelling the 5 miles I would have to drive to get there or even use my free pus pass and then walk up the long drive on arrival.
Very disappointed to say the least as it's now only a couple of weeks away.

I was intrested in this, however I have also looked at the exhibitors and it seems very 'niche'. Could it be called 'The Scottish Very Expensive HIFI Show'?

Re: Scottish HiFi/Av show Dalmahoy 2007

Hi Jason,

Thanks for the kind words! There are plenty of good guys in the business but not many are as lucky as me to have a platform like AV Forums to air their views!!!

I hope that plenty of forum members will make their way to the demo. I have been busily going through my demo material again today to make sure I have the right blend.

Guys please note that the demo's will run every 25-30 minutes and will last around 15 mins. Seating in each is limited to 12 bodies maximum but I am sure that everyone will be able to get in.

Looking forward to meeting lots of you there!

Neil, will you be able to DEMO the difference between Audessy switched on and off this is an area I have yet to experiance.

I'll be going along on Sunday as feel support for HIFI and AV shows is necessary or they will die off and still enjoy it better than the usual Sunday hangover.

Re: Scottish HiFi/Av show Dalmahoy 2007

I went yesterday afternoon with a friend and my 11 year old son and we nearly doubled the attendance

Never seen a show so empty and this was "peak time" just after 2pm

Not that there was much to see anyway with very few exhibitors that were there split in into two different ends of the hotel

Highlight was probably the Hi Audio room with the Usher speakers. Good all round sound although the volume was a bit on the low side.

Other good sounds were coming from the Kef reference speakers and a sky high system from dcs and Hovland (can't remember what speakers they were using)

In the same room they had a Moon system firing into Sonus Fabers which was good but far too loud. They also had a Blu Ray of Night at the Museum playing on a Pioneer plasma which looked good

The Audio Note room was playing awful jazz when we were in and my 11 year old said that it sounded like someone had stuffed cotton wool in the speakers. It was indeed warm, wooly and coloured. Might only be 8 watts in the amp but they were 8 bad watts yesterday. Awful

Low point of the show was the attitude of the Meridian people who were so aloof and uninterested. I asked one of their team if I could hear the DSP speakers and he said "maybe later on". He was too busy sending text messages. even though they had a least 4 guys in there not one of them approached us at all.

All in all a disappointment and I don't think I'll bother next year, that is if there is one

Sorry to hear that the attendance was so poor. Are we ever going to have an AV show again, as this was supposedly being aimed at the 2-channel market?

I have to agree - I was hoping to see the likes of MA, Quad Onkyo etc but no show.

It will have to improve vastly for me to go next year.

Re: Scottish HiFi/Av show Dalmahoy 2007

It is a shame really because the venue is ideal. Out of town with plenty of parking.

A few years back it was really busy and they even had car parking marshalls (reminds me of the Billy Connolly story )

Then again that is when it was hi-fi, AV and ICE. Maybe it is an indication of the lack of interest in hi-fi these days, which is a pity.

No Linn there either even tho' the show is only 35 miles away from their home

HI Guys,

I just wanted to thank everyone who stopped in to the T+W Marketing demo room over the last couple of days. Although there were some very vociferous haters of home cinema most seemed to enjoy the demo and many said t was the highlight of the show for them.

Up until about 3.15 on Sunday my room was always at least half full and in the end I got through a lot more demo's than expected. I had to unfortunately keep comng back to the same pounding demo scenes as the lack of insulation between my room and the next meant that there was no way to do anything with a bit of real subtelty!

Hope those who saw it enjoyed it!

hey neil,

sorry i couldnt make it along - had planned to come along yesterday afternoon but naive planning stopped that to happen - planning to go to the show straight after a 3 hour tae-kwon-do grading is maybe a touch foolish as all i could do was lie down!

Maybe catch up some other time eh!

Great demo and thanks again for letting the pair of us pick your brains about rear speaker placement yesterday. Looking forward to your thoughts on the amps you got recently to try out.

As for that racket next door was that a mince take or something. The speakers looked home made and it was a circa 90's philips cd player and amps resembled an old Kenwood receiver strange way to promote turntable.

The best stereo dem was the Robson Acoustic one. Given the kit on display that one was the most musical IMHO. I hope they do well.

Like all above we were disappointed by manufacturer turnout and dont get me started on the map! It was the quietest show we have been to ever which must reflect the number of manufacturers / dem rooms.

Re: Scottish HiFi/Av show Dalmahoy 2007

Was nice to meet Neil at the show and get some interesting views from him about projectors(will be checking out the epson thanks Neil)and i suppose with it being so quite it was easier to get a chat with everyone,Must admit to being somewhat disappointed with the turnout of manufacturers,I to remember a few years ago it was a lot busier.Highlight for me must be the Millionares set up in the loud and clear room, really stunning. I actually thought Neils set up was suffering a bit from unusual room acoustics, sub was very easy to pin point no matter were i sat but given the time constraints it was not to bad. Audessy EQ maybe not the magic wand that every one thinks it is.What a nightmare sound from the room adjoing him though ,perhaps this racket hindered his setup.

Jason.

Interesting....

As far as I was concerned those big ugly speakers (Dovetail Audio Series Ones in case you were wondering) were the best thing at the show. That sort of dynamics, bass and sheer impact you don't hear often enough IMHO.

You're right about the crappy CD player, though - it was hissing badly as the volume increased!

Re: Scottish HiFi/Av show Dalmahoy 2007

forgot about the Robson speakers which did indeed sound good even though when we were in he was playing the Eagles on his laptop

Spoke to Mr.Robson and his friend and they were decent blokes happy to talk about their speakers. He will only sell after a home dem which is re-assuring

Can't agree with the coffins in the Transcription (?) t/t room, we all thought they were average at best sounding like they came from the 70's as well as looking like it

Be a strange world if we all agreed...

Re: Scottish HiFi/Av show Dalmahoy 2007

I have to admit I did find the whole show a bit of a disappointment. While I have an appreciation of HiFi I am much more interested in Home Cinema. I know it was billed as a high end HiFi show but I was hoping for bit more av.

I only saw one projector running in the whole place and it was a 720p design, albeit a three chipper. IMHO not enough resolution to do justice to the mega 2.35 :1 curved screen. I was also surprised at no scaler presence and the number of laptops that were being used as an audio source in various rooms.

It was good to catch up and have a chat with Neil, although I don't think his room was ideally situated or suited for the task.

Audessy EQ maybe not the magic wand that every one thinks it is
I must admit the Audyessy EQ demo did not provide the audible difference I was expecting and know it is capable of. I suspect the racket from next door meant that Neil did not have ideal conditions when setting it up. I have heard it working under better conditions and the effect is much more obvious and impressive. I have experimented with cables, clean power supplies for sources and amps, speaker placement etc. The Audyessy made the biggest single improvement of anything I have tried. Don't write it off until you've demoed it properly. Think of the Audyssey being the audio equivalent of ISF ing your display and you will get a better idea of its potential.

One day I would like to visit a show and see demos of scaling, isf calibration, audio calibration etc. I thought consumers were becoming much more aware of the benefits of calibration.

The biggest disappointment was that there was not really anything that appeared cutting edge. HD Audio formats, HD DVD, Blue Ray etc. new scalers like Radiance for example.

Ah well there's always (maybe) next year

Re: Scottish HiFi/Av show Dalmahoy 2007

2 years ago THE MEDIA FACTORY had demos of scaling and ISF at the Radisson show ( I think it was the Radisson show, the years are all merging the older I get ) It was really interesting to see the equipment used to measure the screen etc.

I must say I was always of the opinion mediocre sound came from computers but the Robson demo feeding a USB preamp was a real suprise.

That Meridian getto blaster was a real stunner albeit at £1500 it needs to be.

Re: Scottish HiFi/Av show Dalmahoy 2007

Indeed, three years ago I did a presentation with Joe all about calibration at the show in Edinburgh. Folk sought out the show organisers to tell them it was worth the entrance fee alone!

When it was at Glasgow last time Joe did two rooms with Optoma and Fujitsu and Beamax. Piers showed folk what ISF was all about and I did demo's of 720p v 1080p, dlp v lcd and HD media streaming. It was a good day out.

Unfortunately it costs money to do these shows....big money...and with limited resources distributors and I guess manufacturers need to decide what the cost effective use of that money is. If the organisers or Joe or another exhibitor asked me to help I'd be happy to jump in and do more educational presentations as folk seem to really get a kick out of them.
Event3, Event3, Event3.......

Back to shows though, if anyone wants to see a Radiance in the flesh....there will be one putting in a special appearance at the What HiFi/Stuff show this weekend. It'll be at the Chord Company room where it'll be feeding a Fuji 58EBb plasma, doing colour gamut and greyscale correction as well as the usual video processing stuff. It's my own alpha hardware unit running beta software...but I think it still looks rather cool I unfortunately have prior engagements so wont be there.
