Channel 4 today announced the launch of a second E4 channel and revealed plans for a completely new digital channel to run on free to air service Freeview within the next year.
Rob Woodward, the 4 Ventures managing director, who oversees the existing E4 and Film Four channels, said: "We have capacity on Freeview which we're not occupying and in the long term that makes no sense.
"We're reviewing the whole of our channel portfolio and at the appropriate time we'll look to make an announcement."
Mr Woodward said one likely option was the so-called "G4" channel mooted by the Channel 4 chief executive, Mark Thompson, last year. This would be a highbrow factual, education and documentaries channel that could include programmes such as To the Ends of the Earth, Dispatches, Cutting Edge, Equinox and Faking It. '
