Dish for Sky Digital

Hi, I wonder if somebody can help.
I have a standard Sky dish and LNB connected to a Panasonic receiver. The dish has seen better days (rusting).
I also have (still mounted on the house) an original 80cm Sky analog dish which I believe is aluminium. Now I know that the LNB would be no good but could I use that dish with Sky digital if I replaced the LNB (Quad) and re-aligned the dish.

If I need to replace the dish to a specific type for Sky Digital, any recommendations for dish and LNB

Also I am looking to pick up a second used Panasonic receiver. What would be the best to go for DSB30, DSB31, DSB40, DSB50

Thanks

Re: Dish for Sky Digital

There are no specific dishes required for Sky - a dish is a dish.

If you are talking about swapping a quad lnb from a Sky minidish into the other dish you will almost certainly need a little surgery on the plastic housing of the lnb - Sky quad lnbs usually have one or two plastic lugs on their housing (which give the ratcheted adjustment of skew) which you will need to remove carefully with a file, hacksaw or Dremell tool.

Purists will say that Sky lnbs are designed for an oval Sky minidish and you need to change the quad lnb for a standard fitment one designed for a round dish however if you are in a good signal area (your rough location in your profile would help a lot when asking advice in the satellite forums) it does work - I have at present an 80 cm dish with 3 Sky quad lnbs fitted (which I already had lying around) working very well aligned on three different satellites.

Panasonic Sky digiboxes although very highly rated in their day are now beginning to get very long in the tooth (IIRC at least 6 years old) and are beginning to get problematic - they suffer from overheating problems unless modified with heatsinks on the BGA chip. The latest standard boxes are now as fast as them.

Re: Dish for Sky Digital

A point to remember is the Sky dish quad LNBs are specifically made for the particular oval shape of the mini-dish and, as has been pointed out, the fitting is different

Have a look here for quad LNBs with the correct collar/fitting for your old dish

http://www.satellitesuperstore.com/quadlnb.htm

You'll probably see from the prices it's possibly cheaper and certainly easier to buy a new Sky dish - there are plenty of cheap offers (with or without LNB)

Well my opinion anyway and the previous post was edited as I was typing my reply
