It is possible to get free sport from other satellites but will usually require a larger dish (80 cm to 1 metre) with either multiple lnbs (bit in front of dish on the end of the arm) or motorised.
Many of these free channels do not broadcast in English e.g at present Eurosport Germany is available free on Astra 1 at 19.2 East in digital (if you have an old analogue receiver Eurosport is free with English option on the same satellite for probably the next year or so).
Here is a list of all FTA (free to air) Sports only channels on satellites visible to the UK
http://www.flysat.com/tv-sport.php.
Many other free channels also broadcast sporting events within their normal schedules such as RTL on Astra 1 with Formula 1. See here for a site that lists sporting events live on satellite (includes both FTA and pay channels) and although it concentrates on football, it does also cover Rugby, basketball and a few other sports with the menus near the top.
This site also concentrates on football but does cover other sports inc tennis and although concentrating on results does also list some future events and the channels they will be on

Satellite does NOT just equal Sky but can be very broad in terms of channels available (providing you do not mind watching often with foreign language commentaries.
