Non Sky satellite channels

Can anyone clarify for me what I would get, channel wise if I bought one of these....?
http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?...=26m2#overview

At £160 quid and offering 250+ channels and some 1080p broadcast's ( at least it does on the flyer, not on website!?), it sounds to good to be true. I dont know enough about the world of satellite TV to know and the staff in Maplins were useless. What do you get without a Sky subscription?

Re: Non Sky satellite channels

It all depends on what satellite you align the dish on, there are literally thousands of FTA (Free to Air no subscription) channels in many languages across the arc of satellites.

If you are talking about Astra 28.2 (the satellite Sky and most English language channels are on) then there are about 250 FTA channels (inc shopping religious and other dross etc) althhough at present there are only 2 FTA HD channels (BBC HD and Luxe HD) hopefully to be joined later this year by Channel 4 HD, ITV HD and possibly Five HD.

If you are talking other satellites then try this page (click on country flag for language) for FTA channels on all satellites (orbit on chart is satellite position)
http://www.flysat.com/fta.php

On this page click on LH menu for FTA sports, music kids and There is a page for all HD (FTA and subscription)

Re: Non Sky satellite channels

How hard/easy is it to align/realign one's dish? Do you set it up once and thats it job done, or do you keep moving it? In your opinion, are the channels a available from these FTA satellites an improvement on whats available from Freeview? What is BBC HD like?

Many thanks
